2 None SEQUENCE OF BASIC JOB STEPS POTENTIAL ACCIDENTS OR HAZARDS RECOMMENDED SAFE JOB PROCEDURE Ensure area is safe for use of PATs a) Fires b) injury to bystanders a) Follow procedures in Hot Work program b) Post signs warning of use of PAT Check if there is a charge or fastener in the tool Inadvertent firing Visually inspect for charge or fastener Check for proper operation of firing mechanism Failure to operate properly when loaded Pull the trigger and listen for the firing pin to activate. Repeat several times. Determine if powder actuated fastening is proper technique for the job Spall, fracture, bending fastener, etc.
3 Perform Center Punch Test Select proper fastener Failure to fasten properly a) Use manufacturer s recommended fastener for the materials to be joined b) If possible, fire a test round Select proper charge Inadequate seating of fastener, too deep or too shallow a) Use manufacturer s recommended charge b) If possible, fire a test round c) Adjust fastener depth, if tool has such an adjustment Mount necessary guides 6) Failure to use proper guides may result in missing target, ricochets, etc. Use manufacturer s recommended guides (eg, hole aligners, spall guards, etc.) Load fasteners then load Charge Inadvertent discharge while loading Load fasteners before loading charge Press tool against work and pull trigger a) Tool fires into something other than target b) Tool does not fire c) Tool jam d) Material spalls a) Never press too against anything other than intended target.
