3 Subject to paragraphs 2 and 3 below, alltraffic SIGNS used (including retroreflecting road studsand road markings), whether permanent or temporary,shall be of the size, shape, colour and type prescribedfor that use in The TRAFFIC SIGNS Regulations andGeneral Directions 2002 (Statutory Instrument 2002No. 3113), including Working Drawings for TrafficSign Design and Manufacture (Volumes 1, 2 and 3), theZebra, Pelican and Puffin Pedestrian CrossingsRegulations and General Directions 1997 (StatutoryInstrument 1997 No. 2400) and subsequent amendingRegulations.

4 Other relevant requirements are containedin the above Regulations and General that are not prescribed in Regulations need tobe specially authorised by the Secretary of State. Wherethe Contractor proposes to use non-prescribedtemporary TRAFFIC SIGNS , he shall obtain the agreement ofthe Overseeing Organisation to their intended designand location. Where the Contractor proposes to useprescribed temporary TRAFFIC SIGNS , he shall obtain theagreement of the police and the highway authority totheir intended location. The Contractor shall obtainauthorisation and approval from the OverseeingOrganisation for the use of the SIGNS at the specificlocations that are changeable by means other than thepurely mechanical require statutory type approval fortheir construction and operating mechanisms by theSecretary of State.

5 This requirement is in addition to theneed for the design of the sign to be prescribed orspecially authorised. The Contractor s proposal forsigns that require statutory type approval shall includethe reference numbers of any approval already issued inrespect of that equipment. The SIGNS shall not beinstalled until appropriate approval or confirmation ofexisting approval, by the Overseeing Organisation hasbeen Classification4 For the purposes of the Contract the followingclassifications apply:(i)permanent TRAFFIC SIGNS . Any of the trafficsigns prescribed in the Regulations, orspecially authorised by the Secretary ofState, or any part thereof, designed to remainin position at the completion of thePermanent Works or a TRAFFIC cone, cylinderor other TRAFFIC delineator to be retained bythe Employer;(ii)prescribed temporary TRAFFIC SIGNS .

6 Any ofthe TRAFFIC SIGNS defined in the Regulations,or specially authorised by the Secretary ofState, or any part thereof, described inAppendix 12/1 which, unless otherwisedescribed in Appendix 12/1, comply with therequirements of a permanent TRAFFIC sign butwhich will not remain in position at thecompletion of the Permanent Works;(iii)temporary TRAFFIC SIGNS . Any of the trafficsigns defined in the Regulations, or speciallyauthorised by the Secretary of State, or anypart thereof, designed by the Contractor, incompliance with Clause 1216 which will notremain in position at the completion of thePermanent General Requirements for PermanentTraffic Signs1(05/01) Materials for permanent TRAFFIC SIGNS andtheir construction, assembly, location and erection shallcomply with this SERIES , SERIES 1400 and therequirements described in Appendix 12/1.

7 Themanufacture and installation of TRAFFIC SIGNS shall be inaccordance with the quality management schemedescribed in Appendix complete TRAFFIC sign or part thereof shall becapable of passing the tests in BS 873 : Part panels of internally illuminated SIGNS andluminaire face panels shall, unless otherwise describedin Appendix 12/1, comply with impact Category 1 ofBS 873 : Part lit TRAFFIC SIGNS shall comply with Category 1luminance of BS 873 : Part 5 unless otherwisedescribed in Appendix 12 the commencement of fabrication of anytraffic sign , unless otherwise stated in Appendix 12/1,the Contractor shall submit for the OverseeingSeries 1200 TRAFFIC SignsAmendment - August 20033 Organisation s approval:(i)fabrication drawings for directionalinformatory and informatory SIGNS asrequired in Appendix 1/4;(ii)the information about warning , regulatory and other TRAFFIC SIGNS required inAppendix 12 TRAFFIC sign housings shall be provided withvandal and weather resistant locks.

8 Keys, in thequantities stated in Appendix 12/1, shall be provided tothe Overseeing Organisation. Types of lock shall bekept to a backs of TRAFFIC SIGNS shall have a locationidentifying mark as described in Appendix 12 SIGNS shall be carefully handled to preventdamage, transported and stored in accordance with thesign face manufacturer s Foundations for Permanent TrafficSigns and Signals1 The type and size of foundations for permanenttraffic SIGNS and signals shall be as described in, andunless otherwise stated therein shall comply with, excavations for foundations shall be carried outin compliance with Clause 604 and shall be cleared ofall loose material before placing of concrete otherwise described in Appendix 12/1traffic SIGNS and signals supported by a single postplaced in the ground shall have the post installedcentrally in 300 mm diameter or square holes filled incompliance with Clause 2602 with mix ST2 concrete towithin 150 mm of the ground otherwise described in Appendix 12/1.

9 Postsshall be supported for a minimum of 3 days afterplacing the concrete and backfilling shall not take placeuntil at least 48 hours after TRAFFIC signals and illuminated SIGNS provisionshall be made for cable entry through the foundation bymeans of ducting as described in Appendix 12 pockets are formed in concrete foundationstheir plan dimensions shall be sufficiently larger thanthose of the post to allow for positioning and bedding ofthe post and backfilling of the backfilling of foundations shall comply withClause 611 except that where pipes or buried cables areinstalled it shall comply with Clauses 505 and of existing surfaces abovefoundations shall comply with Clause Posts for Permanent TRAFFIC Signs1 Posts for permanent TRAFFIC SIGNS shall be asdescribed in Appendix 12/1 and shall comply withBS 873 : Part 7, the surface protection requirements ofBS 873 : Part 6 and with the following.

10 (i)(08/03) steel posts shall be tubular orrectangular hollow section complying withBS EN 10 210, joists, universal beams orcolumns complying with BS 4-1, and shallbe manufactured from steel complying withgrade S275 JO or S275 J2;(ii)aluminium posts shall be of tubular orrectangular hollow section;(iii)concrete for reinforced or prestressedconcrete posts shall comply with SERIES 1700and Appendix 12 shall not protrude above the top of the signunless supporting an external luminaire, in which casethe protrusion shall be kept to a illuminated posts for pedestrian crossingbeacons shall comply with this Clause and whereappropriate with BS 873 : Part erect
