It draws on BS 873 for the majority of itsrequirements but also other sources including TheTraffic SIGNS Regulations and General Directions(Statutory Instrument 2002 No. 3113). For illuminatedsigns and TRAFFIC signals it utilises the electrical work aspects of SERIES on the above and other matters is availablefrom the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges(DMRB).

3 NG 1201 Regulations, sign Classification andStandards1 The Contractor s proposals for temporary trafficsigns (including haul route signals) should be discussedwith the police and the appropriate highway agreed proposals should be forwarded to theOverseeing Organisation for statutory authorisation (05/01) The Contractor s proposals for TRAFFIC signaland control equipment, variable message SIGNS andretroreflecting road studs will include details of anystatutory type approval previously obtained by themanufacturer. Confirmation should be obtained fromthe Overseeing Organisation that such approval coversthe intended use. Where this is not the case, theContractor will need to apply to the OverseeingOrganisation for statutory type information to be given in Appendix 12/1 forprescribed temporary SIGNS should be the same as thatfor permanent SIGNS .

4 Where a sign is to be erected forless than 6 months, it may be considered to be a fixedshort life sign as described in sub-Clause 12/1 should state those SIGNS which are to befixed short life should be made that current legalrequirements in respect of the following as appropriate,have been met before a TRAFFIC sign is installed:i)Statutory )Statutory approval of )Statutory type on current legal requirements can be obtainedfrom the Overseeing 1202 General Requirements forPermanent TRAFFIC Signs1 Appendix 12/1 should include a Schedule ofTraffic SIGNS containing the details listed in sampleAppendix 12/1 and should also contain all the otherinformation required to supplement the SpecificationClauses which state as described in Appendix 12/..This other information may be shown on fully detaileddrawings cross-referenced from the relevant (05/01) The legend layout should be determined inaccordance with the TRAFFIC SIGNS Manual, Chapter 7:Design of TRAFFIC SIGNS and therefrom the sizes of signfaces, adding on extra area for light-spill screens, whererequired.

7 #NG 1206 Faces for Permanent TRAFFIC Signs1 Full details of the legend layout for faces ofContract-specific TRAFFIC SIGNS (eg. directionalinformatory and informatory) should be shown on fullydetailed drawings listed in Appendix 12 layout of faces of non-prescribed trafficsigns that have been authorised by the Secretary ofState should also be fully detailed on drawings listed inAppendix 12 TRAFFIC SIGNS which have standard symbolsand markings (with permitted variants) need not bedrawn in detail. If a specialmaterial is required, full specification requirementsshould be included in Appendix 12 - August 2003 Volume 2 Notes for Guidance on the Specifications for Highway WorksSeries NG 1200 TRAFFIC Signs43 Thermoplastic material, whether screed, extrusion,profiled, preformed, or spray applied is recommendedfor use on all types of roads particularly those that carrya heavy flow of vehicles and at locations which aresubject to turning marking paints are best used in situationswhere they are not subject to heavy TRAFFIC wear or arerequired as temporary markings, or for the maintenanceof existing edge following additional information should bestated in Appendix 12/3:(i)Whether a tack coat is to be used.

The need for reflectorisation ofroad markings on other trunk roads and onside roads forming part of the Works shouldbe determined in accordance withRegulation 31 of The TRAFFIC SignsRegulations and General Directions 2002, orthe TRAFFIC SIGNS Regulations (NorthernIreland) 1997 as appropriate, and whereappropriate the TRAFFIC SIGNS Manual,Chapter 5.
