It draws on BS 873 for the majority of itsrequirements but also other sources including TheTraffic SIGNS Regulations and General Directions(Statutory Instrument 2002 No. 3113). For illuminatedsigns and TRAFFIC signals it utilises the electrical work aspects of SERIES on the above and other matters is availablefrom the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges(DMRB).

NG 1201 Regulations, sign Classification andStandards1 The Contractor s proposals for temporary trafficsigns (including haul route signals) should be discussedwith the police and the appropriate highway agreed proposals should be forwarded to theOverseeing Organisation for statutory authorisation (05/01) The Contractor s proposals for TRAFFIC signaland control equipment, variable message SIGNS andretroreflecting road studs will include details of anystatutory type approval previously obtained by themanufacturer. Confirmation should be obtained fromthe Overseeing Organisation that such approval coversthe intended use. Where this is not the case, theContractor will need to apply to the OverseeingOrganisation for statutory type information to be given in Appendix 12/1 forprescribed temporary SIGNS should be the same as thatfor permanent SIGNS .

Where a sign is to be erected forless than 6 months, it may be considered to be a fixedshort life sign as described in sub-Clause 12/1 should state those SIGNS which are to befixed short life should be made that current legalrequirements in respect of the following as appropriate, have been met before a TRAFFIC sign is installed:i)Statutory )Statutory approval of )Statutory type on current legal requirements can be obtainedfrom the Overseeing 1202 General Requirements forPermanent TRAFFIC Signs1 Appendix 12/1 should include a Schedule ofTraffic SIGNS containing the details listed in sampleAppendix 12/1 and should also contain all the otherinformation required to supplement the SpecificationClauses which state as described in Appendix 12/..This other information may be shown on fully detaileddrawings cross-referenced from the relevant (05/01) The legend layout should be determined inaccordance with the TRAFFIC SIGNS Manual, Chapter 7:Design of TRAFFIC SIGNS and therefrom the sizes of signfaces, adding on extra area for light-spill screens, whererequired.

From this information the actual sizes of signposts and foundations are to be there are scheme specific requirements theContractor should have freedom to adopt the type ofsign plate (eg. sheet aluminium, or extruded aluminiumor fabricated planks) and should determine thestiffening and framing, if any, for the plate he adopts, soas to meet the mechanical properties and construction requirements of Parts 5 and 6 of BS 873 as if it were tobe tested in accordance with Part Category 1 of BS 873 : Part 5 shouldnormally be specified unless the sign panels are solocated that the likelihood of damage by vandals 2 luminances to comply withBS 873 : Part 5 are suitable for locations with a highbackground luminance such as those described inBS 873 : Part 5, and are achieved by internallyilluminated is not intended that the tests in BS 873 shall becarried out on each sign as BS 873 implies but that eachsign shall be capable of passing the tests of the Contractor s fabricationdrawings for approval should ensure that wheredissimilar metals are used they are separated byelectrical - August 2003 Volume 2 Notes for Guidance on the Specifications for Highway WorksSeries NG 1200 TRAFFIC Signs3NG 1203 Foundations for Permanent TrafficSigns and Signals1It has been assumed that all TRAFFIC SIGNS andsignals will have a concrete foundation.

However whereit is considered a sign can be founded purely in the soilthis should be specified in Appendix 12 design of concrete foundations should beprepared adopting the advice given in NG 2602utilising the wind loading described in BS 873 : Part foundations for free-standing luminairesshould be designed to the same Standards as those forsign posts, allowing for the size of luminaires likely tobe 1204 Posts for Permanent TRAFFIC Signs1 The number, type, size, protective finish andmaterial of posts should be determined to satisfy thestructural requirements of BS 873 : Parts 6 and is available from the OverseeingOrganisation covering the design of posts using steelcircular and rectangular hollow sections and reinforcedor prestressed requirements for large or small integral basehousings or a separately attached root box , or a switch box to accommodate electrical equipmentshould be described in Appendix 12/1.

#NG 1206 Faces for Permanent TRAFFIC Signs1 Full details of the legend layout for faces ofContract-specific TRAFFIC SIGNS (eg. directionalinformatory and informatory) should be shown on fullydetailed drawings listed in Appendix 12 layout of faces of non-prescribed trafficsigns that have been authorised by the Secretary ofState should also be fully detailed on drawings listed inAppendix 12 TRAFFIC SIGNS which have standard symbolsand markings (with permitted variants) need not bedrawn in detail. These SIGNS are shown in the TrafficSigns Regulations and General Directions or inWorking Drawings for TRAFFIC sign Design andManufacture (3 volumes, The Stationery Office). Thediagram number and where necessary the requiredpermitted variant and the overall size of the sign orwhere no size is given, the x height of lettering requiredshould be included in Appendix 12 standard of reflectivity and whether the sign isto be internally or externally lit, retroreflective or non-retroreflective should be specified in Appendix 12/1 foreach permanent TRAFFIC (08/03) Guidance on the use of variable messagesigns on all-purpose and motorway trunk roads is givenin Advice Note TA 60 (DMRB ) and StandardTD 33 (DMRB ).

6 When using overlay material (ECOF-ElectroCutable Overlay Film) to manufacture the sign , faceoverlaps are not used. Manufacturers recommendationsshould be followed for all face 1207 Construction and Assembly ofPermanent TRAFFIC Signs1 When it is proposed to fit SIGNS to new lightingcolumns the technical approval procedures shouldprove relatively simple. If many SIGNS are to be added toexisting columns it is likely that several differentcombinations of column and luminaire will be the effects on the column are small an overalltechnical approval procedure may be considered. In allcases where the columns are over 5 years old thepossibility of reduced strength due to corrosion shouldbe considered. A site inspection of the condition, particularly at ground level, should be carried out andallowance made for any loss of considering the possibility of drilling holes inlighting columns the effect of the holes both on thestrength and fatigue resistance of the column should of the sign face material for the purposeof affixing stiffening is not of the sign face material is permitted inaccordance with sub-Clause for purposes otherthan affixing stiffeners.

This includes the provision ofholes for affixing temporary and permanent 1212 (05/01) Road MarkingsPermanent Road Markings1 Advice on the type and dimension and the locationand layout of road markings within the highway crosssection can be found in the Design Manual for Roadsand Bridges, the TRAFFIC SIGNS Regulations and theTraffic SIGNS should be stated in Appendix 12/3 (cross-referring to the appropriate Drawing) where andwhether thermoplastic, paint or preformed roadmarkings or other special materials are required and, ifthermoplastic, whether it should be screed, extrusion, profiled, preformed or spray applied. If a specialmaterial is required, full specification requirementsshould be included in Appendix 12 - August 2003 Volume 2 Notes for Guidance on the Specifications for Highway WorksSeries NG 1200 TRAFFIC Signs43 Thermoplastic material, whether screed, extrusion, profiled, preformed, or spray applied is recommendedfor use on all types of roads particularly those that carrya heavy flow of vehicles and at locations which aresubject to turning marking paints are best used in situationswhere they are not subject to heavy TRAFFIC wear or arerequired as temporary markings, or for the maintenanceof existing edge following additional information should bestated in Appendix 12/3:(i)Whether a tack coat is to be used.

Generallya tack coat is only required on concrete or onsome old, polished surfaces.(ii)Whether white or yellow colour acceptable alternative shades fromBS 381C are Primrose and Deep Creamwhich are equivalent to Class Y1 inBS EN 1436, and Canary Yellow and Lemonwhich are equivalent to Class Y2.(iii)(08/03) Whether the material should bereflectorised, contain and be surfacedressed with spherical glass beads. All roadmarkings on motorways are to bereflectorised. The need for reflectorisation ofroad markings on other trunk roads and onside roads forming part of the Works shouldbe determined in accordance withRegulation 31 of The TRAFFIC SignsRegulations and General Directions 2002, orthe TRAFFIC SIGNS Regulations (NorthernIreland) 1997 as appropriate, and whereappropriate the TRAFFIC SIGNS Manual,Chapter 5.
