1 Guidelines for Shipping Excepted by Air ( iata /ICAO Regulations) Introduction: Many dangerous goods in small Quantities may be shipped as Excepted Quantities , eliminating much of the paperwork associated with Shipping hazardous materials. In 2009 the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) changed the rules for labeling Excepted quantity packages. Before deciding how to package your dangerous goods for shipment, you should always submit your Shipping request via the on line Shipping request form, Trained personnel can then advise you on packaging options. The discussion of Excepted Quantities is found in section of the iata dangerous Goods Regulations (DGR), which is based on ICAO (international law).
2 The List of dangerous Goods ( iata section ) was reconfigured to add a column (F), which lists the Excepted quantity code for each dangerous good found on the table. The entries in this co lumn range fro m E0 to E5 and are explained in the table below. 3 Packaging Requirements: Packaging for Excepted Quantities must be in compliance with the following: 1. There must be an inner package and each Inner (primary) packaging must be constructed of plastic (when used with liquids of a thickness of not less than mm) or of glass, porcelain, stoneware, earthenware or metal. Do not completely fill inner packaging as space for expansion of liquids must be available ( , liquids must not completely fill inner packaging at a temperature of 55C/130F). The inner packaging must be compatible with the contents Inner package closures must be held securely in place with tape, wire, metal crimps or other positive means.

Intermediate packaging must contain enough absorbent materials to absorb all the contents of the primary container. Absorbent material must be compatible with the material it is protecting. 3. Outer packaging must be strong and rigid, such as a fibreboard (cardboard) box. The dimensions of the outer box must be at least 100 mm of two of the three sides in order to accommodate the required markings.
5 Markings Required: The new Excepted quantity marking (see below) is explained in iata One simply determines whether the dangerous good can be shipped in an Excepted quantity and if so whether it will be packaged according to the limitations shown in the table above and per the packaging requirements listed below. 6 If a document (such as a Bill of Lading or Air Waybill) accompanies dangerous goods in Excepted Quantities , it must include the statement dangerous Goods in Excepted Quant it ies . Required Training Shipments made according to this guideline may only be completed by a person who has a record of appropriate training on file with the DRI shipper and receiving desk.
