4 The key purposes of the QUALIFICATION are:to give students the ability to gain the knowledge and skills necessary to practice veterinary nursing, safely and competently. to allow students to grow as individuals and give them the chance to learn life skills essential for professional development. The programme will include a balance of practice-based learning and theoretical teaching and use a variety of strategies to ensure students can undertake clinical tasks proficiently. Clinical placements in veterinary training practices will allow the acquisition of nursing skills and will enable students to become competent and confident in a veterinary environment. QUALIFICATION STRUCTUREThe Diploma in Veterinary Nursing consists of two pathways which will either lead to a Diploma in Veterinary Nursing - SMALL ANIMAL or a Diploma in Veterinary Nursing - Equine (See Equine QUALIFICATION HANDBOOK ).

Students can learn via a mixture of learning techniques. Centres and students should ensure that the QUALIFICATION is completed within the required time must be delivered in their appropriate contexts: for the Diploma in Veterinary Nursing - SMALL ANIMAL the contexts will be different from that for the Diploma in Veterinary Nursing - is essential that students learn in suitable veterinary environments.

7 Practice-based learning is a vital element in this Diploma. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS Students should have a minimum of five GCSEs (or equivalent), at grade C or above, which should include:English Maths A science subject Students without these qualifications will be required to apply to Central Qualifications for approval. Evidence, testimonials and existing qualifications will be required to support their application. Central Qualifications will judge each application on an individual basis and its decision is must be able to undertake suitable work experience in a veterinary practice that has been approved for training by Central Qualifications. Students must also be able to undertake the full range of tasks necessary to achieve this QUALIFICATION , in order to meet the National Occupational Standards as set out by the Sector Skills Council for land-based and environmental industries (LANTRA).

PROGRESSION This Diploma allows students to progress onto further qualifications if they wish, including the RCVS Advanced Diploma in Veterinary Nursing. RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING (RPL)Students may be credited with any unit of the award that has been gained previously, on the provision that this certification has been achieved within five years of registration for the remaining units. If a unit has been achieved more than five years prior to registration further evidence is required to support the application. Central Qualifications may accept the evidence of recent and relevant experience and alternative qualifications if this has been achieved within ten years of registration.

9 2011 Central Qualifications 8 REVIEW COPY OVERVIEWSUPPORTING PROGRAMME DELIVERYS tudents are required to have access to a taught programme, which will support the QUALIFICATION outcomes. This may be provided by means of an attended course or via a programme of blended learning that is delivered by an approved Diploma programme will require a minimum duration of twenty two weeks (715 guided learning hours). Additionally, students are expected to carry out a minimum of 1185 hours of independent study, which must include supervised work experience undertaken in a clinical veterinary practice. Course tutors should acquaint themselves with the QUALIFICATION units and structure before designing a supporting course curriculum. On condition that the learning outcomes of the QUALIFICATION are addressed and suitably assessed under Central Qualifications guidance, Centres may deliver the award via methods that best focus on the needs of their , work-based learning outcomes are incorporated throughout the QUALIFICATION as dedicated skills-based units or outcomes integrated with knowledge and understanding.

10 Practical learning should be supported by skills teaching within taught programmes and through teaching and supervised experience in a clinical veterinary practice. As a result, Centres are required to have in place suitable arrangements for the teaching of clinical skills. ASSESSMENT AND ASSESSMENT STRATEGYD iploma in Veterinary NursingThe Diploma QUALIFICATION will lead to professional registration.
