Smoke alarms are designed to minimize false alarms. Cigarettesmoke will not normally set off the Alarm , unless the Smoke isblown directly into the Alarm . Combustion particles from cook-ing may set off the Alarm if it is located too close to the cook-ing area. Large quantities of combustion particles are generat-ed from spills or when broiling.

2 Using the fan on a range hoodwhich vents to the outside (non-recirculating type) will alsohelp remove these combustion particles from the the Alarm sounds, check for fires first. If a fire is discovered,follow these steps. Become thoroughly familiar with thesesteps and review with all family members: Alert small children in the home. Leave immediately by your escape plan. Every secondcounts, so don t waste time getting dressed or picking upvaluables. In leaving, don t open any inside door without first feeling itssurface. If hot, or if you see Smoke seeping through cracks,don t open that door! Instead, use your alternate exit. If theinside of the door is cool, place your shoulder against it,open it slightly and be ready to slam it shut if heat andsmoke rush in.

3 If the air is smoky, stay close to the floor. Breathe shallowlythrough a cloth, wet if possible. Once outside, go to your selected meeting place and makesure everyone is there. Call the fire department from your neighbour s home - notfrom yours! 6 Check with yourLocal Authority or retailer for recycling Specifications0940-7204-01(21008004A) :_ 5:29 PM Locate the first Alarm in the immediatearea of the sleeping rooms. Try to monitorthe exit path as the sleeping rooms areusually farthest from the exit. If more thanone sleeping area exists, locate additionalalarms in each sleeping area (See figure 3). Locate additional alarms to monitor anystairway as stairways act like chimneys forsmoke and heat. Locate at least one Alarm on every floorlevel. Locate an Alarm in every sleeping room. Locate an Alarm in every room where elec-trical appliances are operated ( portableheaters or humidifiers). Locate an Alarm in every room wheresomeone sleeps with the door closed. Theclosed door may prevent an Alarm notlocated in that room from waking thesleeper.

7 Smoke , heat, and combustion productsrise to the ceiling and spread the Smoke Alarm on the ceilingin the centre of the room places it closestto all points in the room. Ceiling mount-ing is preferred in ordinary residential con-struction. For mobile home installation, select loca-tions carefully to avoid thermal barriersthat may form at the ceiling. For moredetails, see MOBILE HOME INSTALLATION below. When mounting an Alarm on the ceiling,locate it at a minimum of 10 cm from theside wall (see figure 1). When mounting the Alarm on the wall, use an inside wall with the top edge of the Alarm at a minimum of 10 cm and amaximum of cm below the ceiling(see figure 1).1. 8 Recommended Locations for Smoke Alarms Put Smoke alarms at both ends of a hallway or large room if the hall-way or room is more than m long. For large rooms, one smokealarm is recommended for every 47 square meters of floor space. In homes that are not well insulated, extreme heat or cold can betransferred from the outside to the inside through poorly insulatedwalls and roof. This may create a thermal barrier which can preventthe Smoke from reaching an Alarm mounted on the ceiling. If you arenot sure about the insulation in your home, or if you notice that theouter walls and ceiling are either hot or cold, install the Alarm on aninside wall. In such homes, install the Smoke Alarm with the top edgeof the Alarm at a minimum 10 cm and a maximum of cm belowthe ceiling (see figure 1).

9 Install Smoke Alarms on sloped, peaked or cathedral ceilings at orwithin of the highest point (measured horizontally). Smokealarms in rooms with ceiling slopes greater than in m horizontally shall be located on the high side of the room. A row ofdetectors shall be spaced and located within of the peak of theceiling measured horizontally (see figure 2). Install Smoke Alarms on tray-shaped ceilings (coffered ceilings) on thehighest portion of the ceiling or on the sloped portion of the ceilingwithin ) vertically down from the highest point (see figure 4).Mobile Home InstallationModern mobile homes have been designed and built to be energy effi-cient. Install Smoke alarms as recommended above (refer to RECOM-MENDED LOCATIONS and Figures 1 and 2). In older mobile homes thatare not well insulated compared to present standards, extreme heat orcold can be transferred from the outside to the inside through poorlyinsulated walls and roof.

10 This may create a thermal barrier which canprevent the Smoke from reaching an Alarm mounted on the ceiling. Insuch units, install the Smoke Alarm on an inside wall with the top edgeof the Alarm at a minimum of 10cm and a maximum of belowthe ceiling (see figure 1).If you are not sure about the insulation in your mobile home, or if younotice that the outer walls and ceiling are either hot or cold, install thealarm on an inside wall. For minimum protection, install at least onealarm close to the sleeping rooms.
