2 This wasn t one of those adventures where you spin a globe and book a flight. Prior to this new quest, I had visited Nicaragua annually for several years. As a result, I was deeply familiar with the Central American country. From each of my visits, I witnessed unbelievable growth. The communist grip on private enterprise was loosening, and the economy was growing due to increased tourism. It was more visible with every passing year. The dirt roads were paved, local businesses thrived, and Nicaraguans moved out of subsistence farming and into the working class. On top of that, the natural beauty of the country was breathtaking.

3 My view of the desolate Central American beach looked like a computer screen saver. My mornings were spent reading about markets, taking online economics courses and writing a blog about money and markets. My afternoons were spent surfing and fishing. (Or vice versa, depending on the tide.)Life was bliss except for one major issue: rolling blackouts. Efficient electricity is an ongoing problem faced by most of the developing world. In Nicaragua, the electrical grid was built (and is still maintained) by the Communist Party of Nicaragua. Due to strong economic growth, the country s demand for energy is growing faster than the government s ability to supply it.

4 Often, power goes out for a few minutes or even a full week. The internet shuts down, restaurants close for a few days and tourists are forced to drink warm To a (the national beer). When you don t have power for a week, you find out whether you can live without air-conditioning and Wi-Fi. (Personally, I would rather have Wi-Fi.)Advances in Solar and wind energy systems are helping countries like Nicaragua. Yet, it s not always sunny and windy, so customers still have to rely on the antiquated communist grid for most electricity needs. But a big development is happening in the energy coming revolution will have massive implications on how we collect, store and use energy.

Without the smartphone, FAANG (Facebook, Apple, Amazon, Netflix and Google) would not have returned over 200% between 2016 and 2020, crushing the S&P 500 Index s 47% return over the same time period. The smartphone directly impacted all of them. And now, the average American spends hours per day on their mobile phone that s one-third of our waking hours on something that didn t exist 16 years ago. All of this happened from the collision of smaller, faster chips in phones and increased wireless speeds.

8 But smartphones aren t the only product of converging Big Tech trends. With steady consumption, one GW is enough to power 725,000 homes. Yet Solar accounts for only a small fraction of the world s energy use. But this is rapidly changing. Just in the United States, the Solar Energy Industries Association projects that installed PV capacity will more than double in the next five years. Credit Suisse reports increasing demand for Solar installations in the Middle East, Europe and Latin America.
