An opportunity to share ideas, seek inspiration, and help determine our sector's policy directions for the coming year. There is truly something SPECIAL about coming together in person after so long an energy and a buzz that cannot be created over a computer screen. We meet in the beautiful City of Sydney but the issues we will address spread far beyond the metropolis. The housing crisis, regional health services, and of course the commitment we all share to boost our local economies and drive economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. This year's historic low baseline rate peg has rocked councils across the state, and is threatening to undo many of our hard-won advocacy gains of the last two years.
2 Councils may well be forced to cut spending on infrastructure and services at the worst possible time in the economic cycle. There is much hard work ahead but there is equally a great deal of energy and enthusiasm from the sector, rejuvenated by the December local government elections. This is why we have adopted the Locally Led theme for this SPECIAL CONFERENCE . We are the most trusted level of government, the closest to the people we represent, and best placed to understand what these communities need to unlock the future. As our foremost local and community leaders, I am confident our recently elected Mayors and Councillors are key to building a better NSW. We have a terrific line-up of guest speakers and panellists, including some outstanding Mayors who have generously agreed to bring their own experience and expertise to the stage to benefit all. And we look forward to formally introducing our new Local Government Minister Wendy Tuckerman, herself a former Mayor and council administrator with a solid grounding in the demands and challenges faced by our sector.
3 I look forward to meeting you at the Hyatt Regency Sydney on 28 February and to the program over the following two days: the debate of council motions that help set our advocacy priorities for the year, penetrating insights from our speakers, and the inspiration and cross-collaboration that always flows from LGNSW's in-person events. A very SPECIAL thank you to our sponsors for their generous support: Elite Sponsor StateCover Mutual; President's Welcome Reception Sponsor Statewide Mutual; Planning Sponsor Resilience NSW; Delegate's Lounge Sponsor ASI. Solutions; Distinguished Partners Sponsors Active Super, Landcom, NBN and Coffee Cart Sponsor JLT; and of course, all our trade exhibitors, who are showcasing the latest products and services available to the sector.
