He has called for all the world's citizens to find solutions to world hunger . In keeping with this goal, Bishop Gerald Barnes as the Bishop of the diocese of San bernardino has called on all parishes to take part in a diocese -wide food drive on Ash Wednesday, March 5. Those attending masses and services are asked to bring non-perishable food items with them when they receive ashes on that day. Food donations will be accepted at any Catholic Church in the diocese of San bernardino . The food collected will be used to alleviate hunger in the local community. St. Frances X. Cabrini Catholic Church is joining in this endeavour.

All those joining us for Masses or our Noon Service are asked to bring a non-perishable food item to the Church on Wed., March 5th: Ash Wed. Schedule at St. Frances : 7:30AM - Mass 12 noon service only 6PM English Mass 7:30 PM Misa en espa ol The food collected will support the Interfaith Community Support of Yucaipa Valley (ICS). Susan Walker, Executive Director of ICS shares the following: We can end world hunger with a combined, sustained campaign of prayer and giving. Interfaith Community Support of Yucaipa Valley (ICS) provides groceries to the needy, regardless of faith, in Calimesa and Yucaipa through a distribution center in Yucaipa.

As a non-profit registered corporation formed for charitable purposes all contributions are fully tax deductible. ICS is operated by volunteers. Specific needs for ICS include: You can also help ICS by initiating a canned food drive at your school, workplace or in your neighborhood. The phone number to ICS is (909)797-0007. In addition, the community of St. Frances will offer simple suppers that are free during the Fridays of Lent. We are welcoming all in the community to join us for soup or other simple meals from 5-6:30PM March 7, 14, 21, 28 and April 4th and 11th. A good home-cooked hot meal will be offered free of charge to anyone that comes to our doors during these dates and times.

Our hope is to help alleviate some of the hunger in our area during these six Fridays. Other ways during Lent we can help alleviate hunger as individuals or households: Collect food weekly for ICS Eliminate a fast food meal and give that money to a local charity Pray as family for those struggling in our community Assist with one of the simple suppers. More suggestions and prayers will follow over the next few weeks. Thank you for listening to the call of Pope Francis. Peace, Kirsten Fasting and Abstinence Guidelines Fasting and abstinence are obligations for all Catholics during the season of Lent. They begin the process of purifying and making us receptive to receive the Lord.

At the same time the spiritual practice is not for everyone. FASTING: Fasting was recommended by Jesus both by example and teaching. The least we are to do when we fast is to eat one meal at midday and two small snacks during the day. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are fast days for the universal Church . ABSTINENCE: Abstinence means not eating meat, meat products, and poultry. It is meant to allow us to eat simpler, basic meals. Ash Wednesday, and every Friday during Lent, and Good Friday are days of abstinence. AGES AND HEALTH: All persons who are in good health and have completed their fourteenth year (the day after one s 14th birthday) are asked to abstain from meat on the days mentioned above.
