1 St. Raphael - holy Angels Parish Hamilton, New Jersey 08610 May 13, 2018 - SEVENTH SUNDAY OF EASTER First Reading: Acts 1:15-17, 20a, 20c-26 Matthias is chosen by lot to succeed Ju-das. His chief qualification is his being a wit-ness to the resurrection of Christ. After that, the Twelve are restored as a chosen number. Second Reading: I John 4:11-16 Here is a final exhortation from Jesus be-fore His passion urging His chosen apostles to love one another and believe in God s love for them through the power of the Spirit. John reasserts that God is love. Gospel: John 17:11b-19 In His great prayer for the disciples, Jesus blesses them and then He sends them into the world.
2 He also consecrates them in truth. Reflection on Today s Scripture Readings by Rev. Leonard N. Peterson Over the many years of the so-called War on Terror we have often seen pictures of military personnel, wearing camouflage and bearing backpacks, carrying their weapons to board planes for their deployment. Each one is a potential hero. Their departure is marked with a tinge of sadness, for we know that war makes their return questionable. But there is another kind of war that has been raging much longer than any other. It is largely silent, but all the more deadly. It is the war for our hearts, mind and souls. On one side is goodness and God.
3 On the other is sin and Satan. None of us are volunteers in this fight, because we have been forced into it by our first parents original disobedience.
