2 Mr. Hennegan recognized Mr. Ron Caurso, retired Director of Business Affairs, and Mr. Lamarque recognized Dr. Michael Peterson, Principal of Northshore High SCHOOL . Dr. Peterson shared information presented to him by Mississippi State University. Dr. Peterson said based on a combination of GPA scores and ACT scores, Northshore High SCHOOL outscored every SCHOOL in Louisiana. President Loup congratulated Dr. Peterson and students of Northshore High SCHOOL . 1. Northshore Kiwanis Club Presentation President Loup called on Mr. Rick Danielson. Mr. Danielson presented the official poster of the Mandeville Seafood Fest to Superintendent Folse and the BOARD . He said for the last five years the Northshore Kiwanis Club of Mandeville sponsored a poster contest open to all junior high and high SCHOOL students in the Mandeville area and he recognized a recent graduate of Mandeville High SCHOOL for the design of this year's poster.

3 2. VFW District 9 Commander, Breanna Parra VFW Post 5735 Commander, C. J. Miller, Jr. Ladies Auxiliary President, Ms. Jan Seymour President Loup called on Commander Breanna Parra. Commander Parra said every year the VFW awards students across the nation over one million dollars in scholarship money. She said the VFW also provides SCHOOL monetary awards through the Citizen Teacher Award Program. Commander Parra said this year participants in St. TAMMANY PARISH received over $10,000 in scholarship monies. Commander Parra presented the BOARD a brochure outlining the VFW programs available to students in St. TAMMANY PARISH . Ms. Jan Seymour, Ladies Auxiliary President, requested the BOARD and Central Office staff support the VFW programs. Commander C. J. Miller thanked the BOARD for their support. E. Special Recognitions T 2 1. Superintendent s Award for Outstanding Character and Citizenship Superintendent Folse recognized Justin Magrath, a Fontainebleau High SCHOOL honor student and Eagle Scout, as the winner of the Superintendent s Award for Outstanding Character and Citizenship.

4 Superintendent Folse said Justin was recently featured in the newspaper and the story focused on Justin s work to help the environment and the people in his community. Channel 13 presented a video on Justin s mission to make the world a better place. Superintendent Folse said Capital One sponsored the award and would make a $1,000 donation to Fontainebleau High SCHOOL in Justin Magrath s name. Superintendent Folse also recognized Justin s parents and Principal Johnny Vitrano. Superintendent Folse recognized the Mandeville Middle SCHOOL Recycling and Energy Squads as the finalists for the Superintendent s Award for Outstanding Character and Citizenship. Superintendent Folse said the groups embody citizenship and responsibility by taking care of our environment and increasing a sense of civic responsibility. Channel 13 presented a video on the groups daily volunteer duties. Superintendent Folse also recognized the squads sponsor, Teacher Candace Gianelloni and Principal Kim Wood.

5 2. Capital One Scholarship Recipients Superintendent Folse introduced Mr. Hugh Hamilton, a regional executive from Capital One. Superintendent Folse thanked Mr. Hamilton and Capital One for their generosity in presenting three students with $5,000 scholarships to use during their freshmen year at a Louisiana university. Superintendent Folse congratulated and recognized the following recipients of the Capital One scholarships: Thien Ninh, Northshore High SCHOOL ; Jeffery Jackson, Salmen High SCHOOL ; and Patrick McClain, Northshore High SCHOOL . 3. Bill Gates Millennium Scholarship Recipient Superintendent Folse said there were over 24,000 applicants across the United States for the Bill Gates Millennium Scholarship and only 1,000 winners were chosen from across the country, and 12 winners were from Louisiana. Superintendent Folse said the scholarship provides a 4-year full scholarship to any SCHOOL in the country with a guarantee for fellowships or internships to graduate SCHOOL as well.

6 Superintendent Folse said the scholarship funds up to 10 years of SCHOOL including graduate work and typically provides about a quarter of a million dollars to each student. Superintendent Folse recognized and congratulated Paige Pichon, a Fontainebleau High SCHOOL student, as a recipient of the Bill Gates Millennium Scholarship. Superintendent Folse said Paige embodies what community service is all about. 4. 2011 Louisiana Young Hero Award Superintendent Folse said each year Louisiana Public Broadcasting and the Rotary Club of Baton Rouge select eight Louisiana Young Heroes from across Louisiana. Superintendent Folse said the program honors outstanding students in grades 7-12 who have excelled in the classroom, served in the community, overcome adversity and inspired others. Superintendent Folse recognized and congratulated Jenna Mitchell, a Slidell High SCHOOL student as a recipient of the Louisiana Young Hero Award.

7 Louisiana Public Broadcasting created a video at Slidell High SCHOOL about Jenna and the video was presented to the BOARD . Superintendent Folse said Jenna was also honored at a ceremony at the Governor s Mansion in Baton Rouge. Superintendent Folse also recognized Jenna s family and Principal Billy Percy. 5. Schools Receiving Accountability Awards Mrs. Cheryl Arabie, Assistant Superintendent, said schools in St. TAMMANY received Louisiana Accountability awards for meeting or exceeding growth targets and showing progress in accountability subgroups. The following schools achieved Recognized 3 Academic Growth: Abita Springs Elementary SCHOOL , Covington Elementary SCHOOL , Folsom Elementary SCHOOL , Fontainebleau Junior High SCHOOL , Lee Road Junior High SCHOOL , Little Oak Middle SCHOOL , Madisonville Junior High SCHOOL , Northshore High SCHOOL , Riverside Elementary SCHOOL , Salmen High SCHOOL and Tchefuncte Middle SCHOOL .

8 The following schools achieved Exemplary Academic Growth: Abita Springs Middle SCHOOL , Chahta-Ima Elementary SCHOOL , Covington High SCHOOL , Fontainebleau High SCHOOL , Mandeville High SCHOOL , Mandeville Middle SCHOOL , Monteleone Junior High SCHOOL and Whispering Forest Elementary SCHOOL . Mrs. Arabie also recognized Pontchartrain Elementary SCHOOL for receiving a 5-Star rating. 6. Leonard P. Monteleone Technology Award Mrs. Julie Matte, Supervisor of Instruction, presented the Leonard P. Monteleone Technology Award to Ms. Kassie Dasher of Covington High SCHOOL . Mrs. Matte said Ms. Dasher designed a class activity called Sound, Science, Advertisement and it is the study of sound waves, how they travel, and how they have different frequencies. Students will learn how to create and manipulate sound waves using audio editing software, then produce radio advertisements about characters from the literature classic The Odyssey.

9 Mrs. Matte congratulated Ms. Dasher and Principal Mrs. Deborah McCollum. 7. Mandeville High SCHOOL Division I State Championship Girls Tennis Team Mr. Larry Favre, Supervisor of Administration, said on Tuesday, May 3 the Mandeville High SCHOOL Lady Skipper Tennis Team capped off their 2011 season by winning the Louisiana Division I State Tennis Championship at City Park in New Orleans. Mr. Favre said during the season the team was undefeated in match play and for the second year in a row they won the Region II Team Championship. Channel 13 presented a video to celebrate the team s championship season. Mr. Favre congratulated and introduced the Mandeville High SCHOOL State Championship Girls Tennis Team. 8. SCHOOL Nurse Day Mrs. Cathy Aime, Supervisor of Administration, recognized the SCHOOL nurses and thanked them for their dedication in working with the students and the community. The following resolution was offered by Mrs.

10 Heintz, with a unanimous second: WHEREAS, The National Association of SCHOOL Nurses has designated May 11, 2011 as a day to honor our SCHOOL nurses; and WHEREAS, the St. TAMMANY PARISH SCHOOL BOARD recognizes the efforts of our SCHOOL nurses and their association with the students of our schools; and WHEREAS, the St. TAMMANY PARISH SCHOOL BOARD thanks SCHOOL nurses for their care and concern for the students of Louisiana and our PARISH ; and WHEREAS, the St. TAMMANY PARISH SCHOOL BOARD acknowledges the care and contributions being made to the overall development of our children by SCHOOL nurses; and WHEREAS, the St. TAMMANY PARISH SCHOOL BOARD expresses gratitude and appreciation for the expertise of SCHOOL nurses in our SCHOOL environment and acknowledges their vital role as professionals. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the St. TAMMANY PARISH SCHOOL BOARD wishes to go on record as supporting National SCHOOL Nurse Day on Wednesday, May 11, 2011.
