In the early 1900s, while responding to the needs of military hospitals and aid stations, Aesculap manufactured chrome-plated containers for safe transport of sterile introduced reusable filters in the 1930s, replacing valves and sliding vents.

5 Rubber gaskets were added shortly thereafter, to ensure a proper seal between the lid and container the 1960s, Aesculap containers have been manufactured from a lightweight anodized aluminum, which provides optimal heat transfer properties. The lightweight construction also allows for easy handling and stacking. As technology has advanced, disposable, non-woven filters have replaced the textile the Association of Operating Room Nurses (AORN) Congress in 1980, Aesculap introduced the concept of Rigid Packaging for sterilization in the United States.
