4 Assessment Director DCL1 Public Last Updated 26 November 2021 Introduction Pearson implemented adaptations for some qualifications at the beginning of the 2020/21 academic year, which were supported by the Department for Education (DfE) and Ofqual. Although these were later replaced by the Teacher Assessed Grade (TAG) processes when exams were cancelled. DfE and Ofqual have advised that adaptations will be permitted in 2021/22 academic year and as such we have reviewed those available based on your feedback and in light of TAGs no longer being permitted. A key consideration is that in 2020/21 we were not able to issue Unit Certificates (also known as Notifications of Performance or NOPs) due to the holistic process put in place.

5 We worked closely with Higher Education Institutions to ensure that BTEC learners were not impacted as a result of this but appreciate that the NOPs are an important aspect for many HEI admissions. In consideration of this, and the fact that the current regulation from Ofqual does not currently permit TAGs in 2021/22, we are implementing updated adaptations called Streamlined assessment for the qualifications listed within this guidance. Please note that not all qualifications are able to use the Streamlined adaptations, and some qualifications do not have any assessment adaptations in place, due to their smaller size.

BTEC qualifications Streamlined Assessment 2021/2022 Page 5 of 47 Author: Head of Product Approved By: Assessment Director DCL1 Public Last Updated 26 November 2021 Adaptations for 2021/22 Please note the following requirements: All content must be taught, Although adaptations are available, centres should consider whether they are required to give time back to teaching and learning. Adaptations can be applied at a centres discretion where the pandemic continues to impact learners. Adaptations are only available in this academic year, for assessment due to take place between 1 September 2021- 31 August 2022.

7 Types of adaptations: There are two types of adaptations for Internal assessment that are available with the purpose of giving time back to teaching and learning: Streamlined unit assessment - the number of internally assessed units that need to be assessed in full is reduced, these could be mandatory or optional, but cannot be units that are synoptic, or units that are required for HE progression. Streamlining is available for many qualifications in the BTEC Nationals (QCF and RQF), BTEC Level 2 Skills and the BTEC Firsts suites. In-unit adaptation the amount of assessment evidence needed to meet criteria within an internally assessed unit have been reduced.

8 This adaptation continues to be available for the BTEC Tech Awards, and guidance on these can be found here. In addition to the Streamlined assessment found within this guide, some sectors with substantial practical and/or group work may, if required, also apply in-unit adaptations as defined in the sector's teaching and learning delivery guidance. These in-unit adaptations have been carried across from 2020-21 to support safer access to specialist resources and facilities whilst maintaining the integrity of the qualifications. Learner eligibility: There are currently no plans to have these adaptations extend to learners who take assessments in 2022/23, regardless of when they are due to certificate.

You will only be required to assess one Learning Aim/Outcome from the selected unit. The unit(s) must not be synoptic, or units that are required for HE progression and/or units linked to HE offers ( maths-related units in Engineering). You can only streamline the number of units stated for that qualification , within this guide.

10 What qualifications will include Streamlined assessment? This guide provides specific qualification information on the Streamlined Internal Unit Assessments adaptation, which will be applied to most qualifications in the following BTEC qualification Suites: BTEC Nationals QCF and RQF BTEC Firsts and Level 2 Skills and Technicals For the academic year 2021/22 (1 September 2021 to the 31 August 2022), Adaptations will only apply to qualifications that are considered to be taught alongside or instead of GCSEs or A Levels. This means there is no Streamlined assessment available to qualifications that are level 1 or below.
