Structural Engineering 1 Structural EngineeringMinorThe Minor in Structural Engineering is designed primarily for studentsin the College of Environmental Design to experience the engineeringapproach to the solution of design problems, but it is available to studentsfrom any department who meet the following prerequisites to apply:1. Understanding of material behavior for Structural response and abilityto describe such behavior with simple models2. Understanding of structures and methods of analysis3. Design of structures made of steel, concrete or timberThese basic foundations are complemented by additional courses inmaterials and construction and minor offers to students of the College of Environmental Designaccess to the joint graduate Masters in Science and Masters inArchitecture (MS-MArch) degree from the two departments, one ofvery few such degrees in the entire United States.
With it comes theability to practice either as an architect or as a Structural engineerwith a very thorough knowledge of each field. Whereas engineeringfocuses on analytical methods for the solution to problems, the visual,socio-economical approach of architecture courses is an indispensablecomplement. The same is true the other opportunities exist in major architectural-engineeringcompanies that appreciate the holistic approach to design includingOve Arup, Skidmore, Owings and Merill, Buro Happold, Calatrava, andSchlaich-Bergerman. However, graduates of the joint degree are alsoemployed with smaller companies emphasizing either architectural designor the MinorTo be considered for admission to the minor, students should satisfy thefollowing: Have an overall grade point average (GPA) of Have completed the lower division prerequisite courses with a GPA (for further information regarding the prerequisites, see the MinorRequirements tab on this page) Be able to complete the minor without delaying graduationUpon admission to the minor, students should.
complete a minimum of five courses, of which no more than one canbe counted toward of the requirements of the major(s) Earn a minimum GPA of in the minorAfter completion of the prerequisite courses, students need to completeand submit to the Civil and Environmental Academic Affairs office (750 Davis Hall) a Minor Program Application completion of the minor requirements, the student must completeand submit to the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department sOffice of Academic Affairs the Confirmation of Completion form during thefirst 2 weeks of the term in which the minor will be Majors and Minors Offered by theDepartment of Civil and EnvironmentalEngineeringCivil Engineering ( ) (Major only)Environmental Engineering ( ) (Minor only)GeoSystems ( ) (Minor only)Minor programs are areas of concentration requiring fewer courses thanan undergraduate major.
These programs are optional, but they canprovide depth and breadth to a UC Berkeley education. The College ofEngineering does not offer additional time to complete a minor, but itis usually possible to finish within the allotted time with careful courseplanning. Students are encouraged to meet with their ESS adviser todiscuss the feasibility of completing a minor the Engineering departments offer minors. Students may also considerpursuing a minor in another school or minors must be declared no later than one semester before astudent's Expected Graduation Term (EGT). If the semester beforeEGT is fall or spring, the deadline is the last day of RRR week.
If thesemester before EGT is summer, the deadline is the final Friday ofSummer Sessions. 7 Satisfaction of this requirement is also aprerequisite to enrollment in all Reading and Composition courses at History and American Institutions ( #universityrequirementstext)The American History and Institutions requirements are based on theprinciple that a resident graduated from an American universityshould have an understanding of the history and governmentalinstitutions of the United RequirementAmerican Cultures ( #campusrequirementstext)The American Cultures requirement is a Berkeley campus requirement, one that all undergraduate students at Berkeley need to pass in order tograduate.
You satisfy the requirement by passing, with a grade not lowerthan C- or P, an American Cultures course. You may take an AmericanCultures course any time during your undergraduate career at requirement was instituted in 1991 to introduce students to thediverse cultures of the United States through a comparative are offered in more than fifty departments in many differentdisciplines at both the lower and upper division American Cultures requirement and courses constitute an approachthat responds directly to the problem encountered in numerousdisciplines of how better to present the diversity of American experienceto the diversity of American students whom we now members
From many departments teach American Culturescourses, but all courses have a common framework. The coursesfocus on themes or issues in United States history, society, or culture;address theoretical or analytical issues relevant to understanding race, culture, and ethnicity in American society; take substantial account ofgroups drawn from at least three of the following: African Americans, indigenous peoples of the United States, Asian Americans, Chicano/Latino Americans, and European Americans; and are integrative andcomparative in that students study each group in the larger context ofAmerican society, history, or is not an ethnic studies requirement, nor a Third World culturesrequirement, nor an adjusted Western civilization requirement.
