2 A good starting point if you are new to the industry is theFoundation Diploma. The Foundation Diploma consists of the compulsorysubject Introduction to Shippingand one more subject chosen fromGroup those with more experience, and as a first stepping stone towardsmembership, the Advanced Diplomais available. 10 How can I study?We are aware that different people like to study in different ways. The Diplomasmust be completed in one year, but it usually takes around three years toqualify for Institute Course BooksEach subject area is supported by a course book, written by an industryexpert. Each book provides specialist background to the subject area. Ofcourse the books are a valuable stand-alone resource , but most studentsuse them as essential preparation for the examinations. The content of thecourse books is updated on a regular basis to make sure it accurately reflectslatest developments in the specialist industry is the ICS s own distance learning programme.
