4 Alterations or additions toexisting systems shall comply with the requirements of thissubchapter regardless of magnitude or cost. [ ] 27-924 provisions of referencestandard RS-17 shall be part of this SUBCHAPTER . [ ] 27-925 definitions to be usedin the interpretation of this SUBCHAPTER , see subchaptertwo of this chapter. [ ] 27-926 the requirements governingthe filing of plans and the work to be shown on plans,see SUBCHAPTER one of this chapter. [ ] 27-927 For the requirements governingequipment work permits, equipment use permits, seesubchapter one of this chapter. [ ] 27-928 General systemsof standpipes, sprinklers, fire alarms, and fire detectorsand all component devices thereof, as required by thissubchapter specifically and by subchapters four, five,seven and eight of this chapter shall be installed inaccordance with the provisions of this SUBCHAPTER .

5 [ ] *27-929 Retroactive provisionsof this SUBCHAPTER shall apply retroactively for the specificoccupancies indicated in subdivisions (j) and (s) ofsection 27-954 and paragraph ten of subdivision (a) ofsection 27-968 of this SUBCHAPTER . An application notingcompliance shall be required to be filed on or beforeApril thirteenth, nineteen hundred seventy-nine; andinstallation shall be required on or before Januarythirteenth, nineteen hundred eighty, except as otherwiseprovided in this code.*Local Law 16-1987.(a) The provisions of this article shall apply retroactivelyfor the specific occupancies and spaces indicated insubdivisions (v), (w), and (y) of section 27-954 andsubdivision (j) of section 27-972. Installation of allsystems required by these sections shall be completed onor before April first, nineteen hundred eighty-seven.*(b) Notwithstanding the provisions in subdivisiona of this section, an application for a permit andapproval of plans for the installation of fire alarm andsignal systems as required under the provisions ofarticle five of this SUBCHAPTER in buildings classified inoccupancy group J-1 shall be filed with the departmenton or before June thirtieth, nineteen hundred eighty-seven and such installation shall be completed on orbefore December thirty-first, nineteen hundred eighty-seven.

6 **(c) Notwithstanding any other provision of thissubchapter, the requirement to install a system ofautomatic sprinklers shall apply retroactively to anyspace in a basement, cellar or other location below gradesubject to the provisions of subdivision aa of section27-954 of this code. Installation of such system ofautomatic sprinklers shall be completed on or beforeApril thirtieth, two thousand four.*Local Law 16-1987.**Local Law 26-2002.** Retroactive requirements for office buildingsone hundred feet or more in (a) (1) Notwithstanding any other provisionof this SUBCHAPTER , all office buildings one hundredfeet or more in height and buildings classified in occupancygroup E one hundred feet or more in height in existenceon the effective date of this subdivision shall have a fullsystem of automatic sprinklers installed in accordancewith this SUBCHAPTER .

7 Reports relating to the installation ofsuch sprinkler systems shall be filed in accordance withsubdivision (b) of section of this code and installationof such sprinkler systems shall be completed on or beforeJuly 1, 2019 or, if applicable, on or before a datespecified by the commissioner pursuant to paragraph(2) of subdivision (b) of section of this code.(2) Where an owner of a building orportion thereof subject to such retroactive requirementdemonstrates to the satisfaction of the commissionerthat the installation of sprinklers in a particular, limitedportion of such building is not practicable, either due tostructural conditions or because of designation as aninterior landmark by the New York city landmarkspreservation commission, the commissioner may waivesuch limited portions from the requirements of thissection but may require additional fire safety measuresto protect the health, safety and welfare of the public.

8 (3) Application to buildings with a full system ofautomatic The provisions of this subdivisionshall not apply to buildings in existence on the October22, 2004 in which a full system of automatic sprinklerswas installed or required to be installed pursuant to anyother provision of law. Nothing in this subdivision shallbe construed to limit the applicability of any otherprovision of this code requiring sprinklers in thebuildings referred to herein.(b) Converted Notwithstanding the foregoingprovisions, on and after October 22, 2004, no buildingrevision: July 1, 2008 Title 27 / SUBCHAPTER 17347of the standpipe system that are exposed to freezingshall be protected in accordance with the requirementsof subdivision (a) of section 27-949 of article three ofthis SUBCHAPTER .(7) PRESSURE REDUCING valves shall be provided as required by section27-944 of article three of this SUBCHAPTER .

9 (8) DRIP valves shall be providedbetween the siamese connection and the check valve.(b) When the building requires additional standpipeprotection because of extension in height or in area, orthe occupancy is changed to a use requiring additionalprotection, the new or altered part of the system shallcomply with this SUBCHAPTER . [ ] 27-931 Existing (a) Required systems anddevices existing on December sixth, nineteen hundredsixty-eight shall not be required to be altered toconform to the provisions of this SUBCHAPTER , exceptthat when additional protection is required for a changein occupancy or for a building addition, the new oraltered part of the system shall comply with thissubchapter. Sprinklers in any extension or alterationshall be connected to, or extended from, the existingsystem or a separate water supply as provided in section27-962 of article four of this SUBCHAPTER .

10 Additionalheads shall not be connected to existing undersized piping.(b) Voluntary systems anddevices existing on December sixth, nineteen hundredsixty-eight, but which are not required by this code,need not conform to the provisions of this SUBCHAPTER ,except that when a siamese hose connection is installed inthe system, the siamese connection shall be installed and theentire system pressure tested as required by this 3 standpipe REQUIREMENTS [ ] 27-932 When (a) Wet standpipe systems shall be installed:(1) In all buildings or portions thereof exceedingsix stories or seventy-five feet in height, except thatopen parking structures shall not require installation ofa wet standpipe system unless they exceed ten parkinglevels or seventy-five feet in height.(2) In all portions of buildings two or more storiesin height that have a floor area of ten thousand squarefeet or more on any floor.
