Your hardware has a big effect on the performance of RMI ADVANTAGE and determining the hardware Requirements is not an exact science. Performance depends on many different factors including number of users, activity of users, number of transactions, volume of data and when and how certain tasks are performed.
2 The following recommendations are designed to guide you in choosing hardware for Servers and Workstations. The Minimum Requirements shown are provided by RMI and list hardware/operating System combinations that will produce the highest level of stability and performance. Please note that you will be running the Proprietary Navision Database Server OR Microsoft SQL Server not both Page 3 ADVANTAGE 2009 With the introduction of ADVANTAGE 2009 comes the option of running a 3 tiered architecture. This 3 tiered architecture requires the use of Active Directory and that the database be stored on Microsoft SQL Server.
3 It also requires that a third tier known as the Service Tier be put in place. The Service Tier can be installed on the same server as Microsoft SQL Server or it can be installed on its own separate server. The function of the Service Tier is to allow the business logic of the System to be run on its own server rather than run on the computers of the end users. In addition to increasing security, the Service Tier is multithreaded and can handle more than one process at a time which allows for better performance and more scalability especially in environments with a high user count. If the decision is made to run the Service Tier on its own server, the Requirements for that server are shown below: Server Hardware Minimum Requirements Processor Type: Intel / AMD Compatible x86/x64 Dual-Core Processor or better RAM: 2 GB (not including Operating System Requirements ) Network: 100 Mbps Operating System : Windows XP Professional SP3 Windows Vista SP1 or later (Business, Enterprise, Ultimate) Windows Server 2003 / 2008 (Standard or Enterprise Edition, 32-bit or 64-bit) Also new to ADVANTAGE 2009 is the Role Tailored client whose interface differs depending upon the user s job responsibilities.
4 The information the users see in the Role Tailored Client is the information that they use most frequently in their jobs, this allows for a cleaner and more efficient interface. Use of the Role Tailored Client requires that the 3 tier architecture be in place. 6 NET Framework Page 5 Microsoft SQL Server 2005 /2008 Database The Standard Edition is used as a production database server for the small to mid-size company or department. It is the default edition installed on most systems and is designed to run on the Windows 2003/2008 Server Platform. The standard edition supports the majority of the tools Microsoft has built for the SQL Server. Most Navision SQL Server Option installs will be running on this edition. The Enterprise Edition is used as a production database server. It supports ALL features available in SQL Server 2005 /2008 and scales to the performance levels required to support the largest Web sites and Enterprise Online Transaction Processing (OLTP), as well as data warehousing systems.
7 This version is used for customers who require a scalable solution that will increase performance by taking advantage of additional processors, redundancy, and by providing advanced analysis (OLAP Cubes).
