Local planning authorities have a statutory duty to designate as Conservation areas any areas of special architectural or historic interest the Character or appearance of which it is desirable to preserve or enhance (section 69 of the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990). Effect of designation Conservation - area designation imposes additional controls over demolition, minor development and a measure of protection for trees.
