2 This article willexamine a few of the Technologies for ad-dressing these public concerns and reducingenvironmental impacts. The examples dis-cussed will primarily come from shalegas plays, but the basic concepts are ap-plicable to many other unconventional de-velopment scenarios. Modern shale gas development includesboth vertical and horizontal wells. Theemerging shale gas basins are expected tofollow a trend similar to the Barnett Shale,with horizontal wells becoming increasinglycommon as the plays mature. The growingpopularity of horizontal wells stems fromimprovements in technology and the eco-nomic benefits of greater reservoir example, in the Marcellus Shale, avertical well may be exposed to as little as50 feet of the reservoir while a horizontalwell may have a lateral well bore extendingin length from 2,000 to 6,000 feet withinthe target formation. Using horizontal drilling and HVHFon the one hand is a contributor to a keyenvironmental benefit (minimizing surfacedisturbance) and on the other hand is thesource of one of shale development s en-vironmental concerns ( Waste generation).

3 Reducing Surface ImpactsSurface disturbances are part of oiland gas development. To ad-dress this inevitability, oil and gas com-panies have adopted a mantra of avoidingenvironmental impacts when possible,minimizing the impacts that cannot beavoided, and mitigating the impacts thatremain. For example, the companies could de-velop an area of one square mile (640acres) using 16 vertical wells (at 40-acrespacing), each located on a separate wellpad (Figure 1).

4 However, the industryprefers a different approach: using fourto eight horizontal wells drilled from asingle well pad (Figure 2). Using horizontalwells in the Barnett Shale has allowedthree or four vertical wells to be replacedwith a single horizontal well. At full-field development scale, thisreduction in the overall number of wellpads significantly reduces the total envi-ronmental disturbance. The number ofproduction facilities required and totalmileage of access roads and utility corri-dors are reduced, thus minimizing wildlifehabitat fragmentation, impacts on thepublic and overall environmental , horizontal drilling also canmake it possible to develop areas wheresurface occupancy is impractical or performed in 2008 for Department of the Interior, usingthe Fayetteville Shale as an example, es-timated that a shallow vertical gas welltypically would have a well padplus incremental acres for associatedprocess areas, access roads, utility corridors,etc.

Incontrast, a well pad for four or more hor-izontal wells in the same play would oc-cupy only four acres plus incrementalacres for associated process areas, accessroads, utility corridors, etc., resulting in atotal of acres disturbed. Thus, sixteenvertical wells with individual pads androads would disturb 77 acres, more than10 times the area of horizontal wells ca-pable of producing the same natural difference in development footprintis significant in rural and urban Technologies and approaches alsocan limit surface disturbance associatedwith drilling. Advances in drilling tech-nology, such as directional drilling, closed-loop drilling, coiled tubing drilling, modularrigs, pneumatic drilling, slim-hole drilling,and automated rigs, allow smaller wellpads. In urban settings, steel storage tankscan be used to hold drilling fluids as wellas to store water and fluids for use duringhydraulic fracturing.

6 Tanks used in closed-loop drilling systems decrease the amountof drilling fluids required by facilitatingreuse. This in turn generates less wasteand allows the use of smaller well pads. Fit-for-purpose rigs also can reducedrilling pad size . These specialized rigscan drill multiple horizontal wells effi-ciently from a relatively small well rigs are mounted on a rail system,enabling them to drill one well, then bemoved on the rails several feet to drill thenext. The rig can drill a row of directionalwells from one setup, then the rig andrails can be repositioned to drill a secondrow of directional wells. 7 In this manner,eight or more wells can be drilled fromone small well pad, shrinking the drillingoperation s footprint while reducing rigmoves and therefore downtime. Such spe-cialized rigs are limited in number andmay not be available in all WasteWaste is generated throughout the de-velopment process, but is perhaps mostprominent during two phases: the drillingphase and the stimulation/completionphase, during which HVHF generateslarge volumes of produced water. Properlymanaging these activities can minimizewaste, Reduce costs, and provide ancillaryenvironmental wastes in the form of cuttingsand used drilling mud have long been aubiquitous Waste associated with oil andgas development. However, closed-loopdrilling systems offer a means to minimizethose wastes. Closed-loop drilling systems utilizingshale shakers, sand and silt removal, de-watering equipment and integral mud tankscan effectively manage the drilling mudsystem, limiting Waste and minimizing oreliminating the need for earth-disturbingreserve/mud pits.

8 In these systems, drillingmud is commonly recycled after processingto remove fines and solids. By separating the cuttings and recyclingthe mud, the volume of Waste , as well asany surface disturbance associated withdisposal of the Waste , is minimized. Closed-loop systems also can provide for a smallerwell pad footprint because the mud is keptin tanks rather than earthen control and drilling mud maintenancecan have numerous other benefits, includinglower mud volumes, increased penetrationrates, and longer bit life. Furthermore, theself-contained nature of closed-loop systemsreduces the chance of can be reduced even more byusing alternative drilling systems wherepractical. For example, some operatorsin the Marcellus Shale are drilling thevertical portion of the well bore usingsmaller air-rotary drilling rigs, completelyeliminating the need for drilling mud andlimiting the Waste generated to drill cut-tings for that portion of the well the completion stage of wellconstruction, unconventional reservoirsgenerally require HVHF , the largest volume of wastegenerated during the shortest period is thereturn flow of spent fracturing fluids fol-lowing reservoir stimulation.

9 Fracturing a typical horizontal shalegas well may require 2 million-5 milliongallons of water on average. In most cases,water produced during flow back will con-tain residual spent chemicals from thefracturing fluids as well as dissolved ionicconstituents that are naturally present inthe formation water or minerals naturallypresent in the shale formation. Volumes of water produced during flow-back vary from play to play and even fromwell to well within a play, but in the firstfew weeks or months the volume for hori-zontal wells can range from 15 percent to35 percent of the original fracture fluid vol-ume. Vertical wells may have higher per-centage rates of recovery during flow Waste has raised a number ofpublic concerns. In addition, some areasof the country have few commercial dis-posal facilities or old, played out oil orgas fields that may be suitable for under-ground injection of Waste brine. This hasresulted in operators transporting thewaste water long distances to commercialdisposal facilities, which is costly andcreates additional risk of spills.

10 A new trend is emerging in someshale gas plays, including the Marcellus:reusing produced water as make-up waterfor subsequent HVHF stimulation the water produced during flowback has returned to the surface, servicecompanies and operators evaluate its qual-ity to determine how much treatment, ifany, is needed to reuse the water. In manycases it is more practical to treat thewater to a quality appropriate for reusethan to treat it to the level necessary formore sensitive uses ( , industrial ormunicipal), or for permitted discharge tosurface water reuse, the produced water typicallyis blended with fresh make-up water toachieve the volumes necessary for thesubsequent HVHF stimulation job. Theproduced water often receives limitedtreatment before blending, such as theaddition of treatment chemicals to floc-culate and precipitate out select metallicions that might cause scaling. In addition to this treatment, the pro-duced water is mixed with a larger volumeof freshwater to dilute the chlorides andother salts present in the produced blends are often 20 percent producedwater to 80 percent fresh water, but theratio will depend on site-specific condi-tions, including the quality and the volumeof produced water being used.
