Celebrated historic and contemporary efforts to buildurban parks, holding our Annual Meeting at theBotanical Gardens with Tupper Thomas, Director ofProspect Park as our speaker. Organized Preservation Awards, celebrating the excitingefforts of many people to preserve our community s special places. Conducted Downtown Discovery Tours for school children. Hosted the annual heritage Society party at a distin-guished residence. Helped organize Turning On Alabama-Photographs andArtifacts from the Collections of the Alabama PowerCompany and the Alabama Historical Radio Society , anexhibition at the Birmingham Public Library Gallery.

2 Drafted nominations for Bethel Baptist Church and theSixteenth Street Baptist Churches to the TentativeList for nomination by the United States as interna-tionally significant world heritage sites. Completed National Register of Historic Places nomi-nations for the New Pilgrim Baptist Church (listed8/24/07, Graymont School (listed 8/30/07) and theCenter Street District (listed 10/1/07) and theParsonage of the First Baptist Church of Ensley; House. Grew our garden at Sloss Quarters, receiving First Prizefor Urban Gardens from Keep Birmingham Bynum, Dee Haynes, Bill Tharpe, Marjorie White, and DaveCisco, pictured with a Philco model l89L rigged to play old radioshows, organized the Turning On Alabama. The exhibition exploreshow the power for lights and radios, industry and agriculture wasdeveloped, transmitted, and marketed by Alabama Power from1920 to 1945. D.) is pictured at the parsonage in 1963 and her eagle eye and immense acumenTrustee Katie Tipton presides over the editingof the files of this year s book, Hand DownUnharmed-Olmsted Files on Birmingham Parks,1920-1925. This inside look at five years in agrowing city s life the people, the events, thepassion as well as what it really takes (the hardwork, the disappointments, the personal battles)to plant the seeds of a vision of a park system forBirmingham. It s a great Morgan and the Auburn University Centerfor Architecture and Urban Design studio at theYoung and Vann Building hosted our annualPreservation Awards reception honoring hometownheroes, including the Birmingham Museum of Artfor its folk art gallery also located in the building. The heritage Society gathered with Henryand Mary Moren Crommelin to enjoy their home, a masterful design by architectFor their support of the public good, the Society honored Sam Frazier for hisdecades of leadership (above); the foundingpartners of the Norwood Resource Centerat the Nygren House: Robert Gilmore,Norwood Neighborhood Association, s Church and The Crisis Center(below); and the No Elevated-Citizens toSave 280of Mountain Brook and Home-wood who joined with city officials todevelop alternatives to an elevatedexpressway (below, right).

4 Among otheraward winners are Dru and Susan Ellard(above)for their old house revival onSouthside; Chad and Chesney Moore andtheir parents for the transformation of thehistoric Rialto Theatre (above, right); andthe team of architectural, engineering, andorganizational talent that led the exteriorstabilization campaign at Sixteenth StreetBaptist Church (right).President Lillie Fincher and Sallie Leeaccept the Keep Birmingham Beautifulaward from Mayor Bernard Kincaid forour growing garden. Located on a formerconcrete plant site, roses, collards, purplerunner beans, watermelon, and especiallyherbs are doing fabulous, as are UAB student volunteers. D. O.
