2 The previous digital format had been issued since July 1, 1999. Current License Since 01/01/2010, Indiana has issued Real ID driver s licenses and ID cards designated by a gold star, or a hollow star if issued after December 9th, 2012, in the upper right-hand corner. Persons making application for a new driver s license or ID card must provide specified documents for identity, lawful status, Social Security number and Indiana residency/legal address. Persons renewing or replacing their current Indiana driver's license, permit, or identification card can choose to apply for a Legacy license by verifying their name, date of birth, SSN and legal address as it appears on the BMV record or the customer can provide original versions or certified copies of documents so they can obtain a Real ID credential. Persons amending their credentials must provide documentary evidence supporting the change.

3 If the driver is attending a driver education program, the DE Permit restriction is added to the Learner s Permit. Current Documents The color strip across the top is a pinkish dusty rose, unless it is an ID card; then the strip is green. Different credential types are indicated by different header colors of map icon in upper left corner. Brown is an Operator s Driver License, Public Passenger Chauffeur s License, and Chauffeur s License. Red designates a CDL and Green an ID. Purple is a Learner s Permit or Learner s Permit with a DE permit restriction. CDL Indicator: CDL is indicated with a red band across the top, as well as by classification. Issuance A Real ID is required for anyone applying for a new IN driver s license, permit, or ID card.

5 Persons who are not citizens (legal temporary or permanent residents) are required to have a Real ID and must present full documentation to apply for a new or renew their existing driver s license, permit, or ID card. The location of requirements for Proof of Identity is at Age Requirements The minimum age for a license issuance is 16 years and 90 days as long as the applicant has held a learner s permit for 180 and completed a driver education course; otherwise, 16 years and 270 days without driver education. A learner s permit with the DE restriction can be issued at age 15, if enrolled in an approved driver education course. A learner s permit holder who has commenced an approved driver education course may participate in practice driving if the front passenger seat is occupied by a licensed driver with valid driving privileges, who is at least 25 years of age and related by blood, marriage or legal status, a spouse with valid driving privileges who is at least 21 years of age, an individual with valid driving privileges who is licensed as a driver education instructor and is working under the direction of a driver training school, or an individual with valid driving privileges who is a certified driver rehabilitation specialist recognized by the bureau who is employed through a driver rehabilitation program.

6 A learner s permit issued without driver education enrollment can be issued at 16 if the holder is not participating in an approved driver education course and is less than 18 years of age. The learner s permit holder may participate in practice driving if the passenger seat is occupied by a licensed driver per one of the same requirements as mentioned above. Drivers under the age of 21 are issued a Probationary Operator s License that restricts the driver s cell phone use, nighttime driving, and passengers for the first 180 days. Residency New Indiana residents must obtain an Indiana license within sixty days of establishing residency in Indiana to maintain legal operation of a vehicle in Indiana . For the purposes of obtaining a driver's license, learner's permit, or identification card, the following persons living in Indiana solely for any of the following reasons are not considered to be Indiana The 2018 MVR Access and Decoder Digest 266residents of Indiana ; educational purposes, active-duty in the Armed Forces, or temporary employment are not considered to be residents of Indiana .

7 Renewal The validity period of an operator's license may be between 2 and 6 years or matches the end of stay for those with temporary lawful status; for a CDL the period is 4 years. Older drivers have different periods (see below). Drivers keep the same driver s license number when renewing. US Citizens and those with permanent lawful status may renew their license or ID card up to one year in advance of their expiration. Credential holders with temporary lawful status may renew up to 30 days in advance of their expiration. When the operator's license of an Indiana operator who is in the military and stationed outside of Indiana has expired, the license remains valid for 90 days following the person's date of discharge. Persons may renew online every other issuance if they meet the following requirements: Are under 75 years old. Are within 12 months of the renewal date. Current license is not expired more than 180 days.

8 Customer record does not have certain restrictions. Do not require any testing or medical certifications. Hold an operator s license, chauffeur s license or ID card. Commercial driver's licenses or public passenger chauffeur s licenses cannot be renewed online. Is a citizen of the United States. No change in name, address, or other information. Previous photo is on file. Are not suspended, revoked, cancelled, or invalidated. Do not have six or more active points on driver record. Are not switching from a non-Real ID to a Real ID. No points on current license, if customer is under 21 years old. Elderly-Related Restrictions Licenses issued after December 31, 2005 for drivers 75 to 84 years old expire at midnight on the birthday of the holder three years following the date of issuance. Licenses issued after June 30, 2005 for drivers at least 85 years old expire at midnight on the birthday of the holder two years following the date of issuance.

9 The same timelines are applied to motorcycle endorsements. Vehicle Insurance, Title, and Registration Facts Registration Renewal Vehicle registration is staggered by month corresponding to owner's last name initial. Company owned vehicles are registered in January. Heavy weighted vehicles are registered in February. Most registrants may renew vehicle registrations online, at An Indiana Driver License, Social Security Number and zip code are needed to create a myBMV account. Renewal is not available with this system if additional documentation is required, such as with some distinctive license plates and heavy weighted vehicles. All customers receive their registration cards and license plates through the mail under a centralized fulfillment system. Indiana Code specifies all "off road" vehicles purchased or acquired after 12/31/2009 must obtain a certificate of title. As of January 2014, the BMV took over the registration of off road vehicles and snowmobiles.

Inspections and Emissions Testing Indiana has no provision for statewide vehicle safety inspections or emissions testing.
