Built in 1886 and used as a firehouse until1977, it is the oldest firehouse in the city. In 1979 1980, it beganits second life as the Senior Center, on the main floor, and the WestBranch of the Manchester City Library in the basement.

5 Life in thecramped firebarn basement has often been challenging for librarystaffand patrons, but the value of the library has never been ofa new Senior Center in 2003,opened theway for the West Branch to double its space, by taking over themain floor ofthe King Fire House. The frames of the horse stallsgave us the idea to focus on the history of the building for decora-tion,and with the help ofChiefKane, we were able to resurrect anold brass fire pole, and fire wagon traces. Donations from one ofour younger patrons who made and sold glittery notecards, made itpossible to enlarge pictures of the building from the early 1900s asanother nod to the building s past.

6 Thanks to another library patronwith artistic abilities, we have a horse painted in one of the oldstalls. City money from the Facilities Division budget made new car-pet, paint, some renovations, window film, four new computers, andmany, much needed, shelving units possible. But without the LibraryFoundation it would have been a very empty, unfunctional Manchester City Library Foundation provided a new desk andlateral file for the reference area on the lower level, the children slibrarian s desk, 2 reading chairs in the periodicals area, the fourtablet armchairs for study, reading or laptop us, a small computertable used in the reference area for our additional public internet, and a wonderful (and secure) oak display cabinet in the children sarea.

7 And there is MORE! (I don t know we can thank you foreverything). The furniture for the children s area, including the studytable and 4 chairs, the children s puzzle computer desk, the two redfloor rockers, and the oh-so cozy reading nook. Most recentlyarrived, thanks to the Foundation, are the air conditioners that aremaking the summer so wonderful for patrons and new entrance is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday andFriday from 8:30 until 5:30 , Wednesdays from 12:30 until8:30 stop by for a tour and many, many thanks for allyou have done for the West Community Library and our Wish ListOutside event sign for the West Branch- $2,500 Accucut Die Machine to make Children's displays - $6,0004 Flat Screen monitors for Technical Services - $5 70 unit for Circulation area - $6,0004 folding tables for the West Branch - $400 DVD and Audio book funds - $5,000 Some of the things that were funded in 2006!
