So THEY BLEED WE WEEP WE LIVE THEY SLEEP Volume 13, Issue 6 June 2018 THE AVENGER The next meeting of the Isle of Wight Avengers will be held at 6:30 PM, Tuesday, June 5, 2018 at the Carrollton Ruritan Club Building located at 14138 Norsworthy Drive, Carrollton, VA. 23314. Social at 6:00. PROGRAM Division Quartermaster Keith Morris Keith will be speaking to us on the history of the Virginia State Flag. COMMANDERS S COMMENT S Fellow Avengers, The summer is upon us and this will be our last meeting until September.

We ve had a busy couple of weeks lately. Several of us joined the Isle of Wight Chapter UDC ladies on Memorial Day weekend at Ivy Hill Cemetery. It was a nice service and I wish we could get some more participation in both groups. Our ancestors deserve to be honored. I would hate to see this service fall by the wayside. After the service, we met at Frank Hall s office and picked the winners of our 2018 Scholarship. The results will be announced at the Camp meeting. June 2nd was the Jefferson Davis Memorial Service in Hollywood Cemetery. Keith Morris and Eddie Whitley ran the Division Quartermaster store.

Buddy and Joan Jones attended as they usually do along with Brett Griffin and me. I presented our new Camp wreath and had many people compliment how it looked. I must thank my wife, Isle of Wight Avengers May 2018 2 Annette, again for making the wreath for us. Our own Keith Morris will be speaking to us on the history of the Virginia State Flag and the Salute to the Flag. It looks to be a most interesting topic. As I stated earlier, this is our last meeting for a while. Come out and support your Camp, bring something good to eat and enjoy the camaraderie before we take the summer break.

I look forward to seeing all of you on Tuesday, June 5th Deo Vindice, Tony ADJUTANT S REPORT The Camp meeting was called to order on May 1, 2018 at 6:30 by Commander Tony Griffin. Chaplain Tom Conley gave the Invocation with Keith Morris leading us in the pledges to the Flags. Brigade Commander Tommy Thomas led the Camp in the reading of The Charge . Our guests for the evening, Mrs. Joan Jones, Mrs. Thelma Cockes, William Cuthrell (Past VA Division Adjutant), Lorene Cuthrell, John Hughes, and Jerry Bubba Dashiell III (son of Compatriot Jed Dashiell} were all introduced by Commander Griffin. Compatriot William Cuthrell has moved back to Virginia in Smithfield and is looking for a SCV Camp to call home.)

The Commander introduced the four Division Officers who were in attendance: himself, Present Past Commander of the Division, our guest speaker, Division Treasurer Bill Graham, Division Quartermaster Keith Morris, and 1st Brigade Commander Tommy Thomas. Note that 3 of these 4 officers are members of the Avengers. Commander Griffin announced that Lt. Commander Tommy Davis was again going back for surgery and to keep Lt. Commander Raymond Groves wife Jen in your prayers for her illness. Adjutant Whitley informed the Camp that Compatriot Richard Jenkins was also returning for surgery. Chaplain Tom Conley informed the Camp that Compatriot John Edwards wife Virginia has now been placed in Hospice Care.

The Commander invited our guests to join us for our potluck dinner and to go first through the buffet line. After dinner, our guest speaker, Division Treasurer Bill Graham lit the Camp Candle in honor of his ancestors Arthur Parkens and Captain Jacob Warden. Bill travelled from his home in Orange, VA to be our guest speaker. His program, a slide presentation, was on Johnson Island Prison for Confederate Officers outside Sandusky, Ohio. This topic was of interest to Bill as his ancestor Capt. Jack Warden was imprisoned there. He brought to life the ordeals of the captives. Commander Tony Griffin recognized our 4 compatriots who attended the Division Reunion in Roanoke, Keith Morris (Division Quartermaster), Adjutant Ed Whitley, Tommy Thomas (1st Brigade Commander), and Danny Johnson (Chairman of Delegates for the Avengers).

Keith thanked Ed for assisting him as the Division Isle of Wight Avengers May 2018 3 Quartermaster during the 2 months prior to and at the Division Reunion. Tony stated that due to a printing error he did not have all the certificates for Distinguish Service Awards with him. He presented Distinguish Service Awards from the Division to Compatriot Brett Griffin and to Division Quartermaster Keith Morris. The Adjutant reported that he had collected 2018-19 dues from 9 of the 33 members. He put out a friendly reminder that the dues must be in by August 1, 2018 and that the Camp is dormant in June and July.

A return envelope was sent with the dues notice for easy return to the Adjutant. The new Division Adjutant has already contacted a printer and is in the process of printing out dues notices from the Division. If you received one and already paid your dues, just ignore it. If you have not paid your dues you may use either form. Chaplain Tom Conley had posted trivia questions in last month s newsletter. He asked the questions again at the Camp with Mrs. Joan Jones answering over 90% correctly. As advertised in last month s meeting and in the newsletter the Camp held an auction for the Camp s Building Fund.

The Appomattox Courthouse Throw with Robert E. Lee was sold to Lt. Commander Raymond Groves. Past Commander Keith Morris bought the framed picture of Robert E. Lee with the Alabama Confederate money (reproduced). The framed COGRESSIONAL RECORD Vol. 139 No. 5 Robert E. Lee The Noblest of Americans was not bid on, so it will be up for auction at the June meeting. The following upcoming programs were announced: ROBERT E.
