We send a link to a recipe to warm and news from fall events. There is also a healthy list of events coming up, and links of interest for the collectors. Culinary Connections: Several readers noticed news of an unusual Potter -inspired concoction. A gin-based cocktail, by the name of "Mr Tod's Redemption" took the top award in a competition between bartenders from across the UK. The goal was to come up with an "English Garden Twist" on the classic Gin Cocktail. Wayne Chapman, the winning creator, topped "Mr Tod's Redemption" with a pinch of carrot salt and presented it in a picnic basket with gingham blanket and a spritz of fresh-cut grass scent in the air to complete the effect.

The Southland Times in New Zealand ran an article on cooking with lamb and their featured recipe, "Miss Potter 's Hotpot", is a tribute to Beatrix . " Beatrix Potter 's remarkable brain embraced languages, natural history, gardening, conservation and sheep breeding. In later life a good plain cook, Miss Potter 's Lancashire background suggests that the county's traditional hotpot, courtesy of one of her Herdwick sheep, would have featured quite often at Hill Top farm." Eastwood House was another of the Potter family's holiday homes and one of the sites included in the Society 's Study Conference a few months ago. It is also where Beatrix wrote the picture letter with Peter Rabbit's story, later to become The Tale of Peter Rabbit. Interestingly, the grandmother of one of the current owners was the under housekeeper at Eastwood House in the late 1940s.

Recent Events: Kara Watkins volunteered at the Huntington Library's "A Celebration of Stories", featuring Beatrix Potter Readings and sends this report: "On Saturday, October 11, Beatrix Potter Society Members participated in "A Celebration of Stories" at the Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens in San Marino, California. The one-day event featured family-friendly activities and performances celebrating books, storytelling, music, and theater sprinkled throughout the Huntington's expansive grounds. The event featured informal readings of Beatrix Potter tales near the Lily Ponds. 6 BPS Members from across Southern California volunteered to entertain groups of eager children of all ages throughout the day with readings of The Tale of Peter Rabbit and The Tale of Jemima Puddle-Duck. Many of the children lingered at the crafts table to create paper bag puppets of their favorite Potter characters and start working through take-home activity packets. Later that afternoon, high tea was served at Mary and Edmund Fry's charming Rose Tree Cottage, just up the road in Pasadena. Ten Members reconvened for conversation, sipped tea and nibbled on Yorkshire pudding, scones, and shortbread." A group of BPS Members gathered at Titcomb's Bookshop in Sandwich, MA for Susan Branch's book signing event for Autumn from the Heart of the Home.

Bray On November 1, Betsy Bray gave a slide show of photos from her summer trip to Scotland for the Society 's International Study Conference. It would seem when Members gather anywhere good food is involved, and Betsy served up a large cream tea on Peter Rabbit china. To cap the afternoon, all raced outdoors to use the last light of the day for a group picture. You'd not guess from the smiling faces, but it was raining! Thanks to the very patient Cheryl Bryan for playing photographer.

Spring is a lovely time in the Lakes with bluebells in the woods, newborn Herdwick lambs in the fields and the countryside looking fresh and bright. The holiday will be participant centred but will include a visit to one of Beatrix 's farms, short countryside walks, a garden visit and a dip into local traditions and foods.
