2 Hear the prayers of your servant, and of your people Israel. PSALM: The Lord is compassion and love, slow to anger and rich in mercy. ACCLAMATION: Alleluia, alleluia! Speak, Lord, your servant is listening: you have the message of eternal life. Alleluia! SCRIPTURE REFLECTION - Matthew brings to a close his 'discourse on the church', continued from last Sunday's Gospel, by quoting Jesus' response to Peter's question: "how often must i forgive my " Jesus' reply, also quoted by Luke * :4), is unequivical: there is no limit! Jesus then amplifies His reply by taking verse 4 of the first reading from the Book of Ecclesisticus: "showing no pity for a man like himself, can he then plead for his own sin?", He expands this into the parable of the unforgiving debtor.

3 As with many of Jesus' parables, and in common with rabbis of His time, He deliberately exaggerates the details to reinforce His message, and, very importantly, to help His hearers the more easily to commit His message, and its meaning, to memory. Hence, ten thousand talents, something in the region of 5,000,000 in today's money(!), is an intentionally fantastical sum, and one hundred denarii is equivalently barely 20. This device throws the comparative reaction of the servant's plea for mercy to his master, with his own reaction to his fellow servant's plea, into stark relief. Point made! Jesus pointedly concludes the parable by emphasising that the observance of His teaching cannot be just a form of words, a purely outward show of compliance.

4 With the words: "were you not bound?", Jesus lays upon His disciples not a choice - take it or leave it - but an obligation; and if further emphasis is still needed, He concludes with a demand for sincerity, a forgiveness" from the heart."
