Alwaysadd Caustic soda Solution towater with constant agitation. Neveraddwater to the Caustic soda The water should be lukewarm 80 100 F(27 38 C). Neverstart with hot or addition of Caustic soda to liquid willcause a rise in temperature. If Caustic sodabecomes concentrated in one area, or is addedtoo rapidly, or is added to hot or cold liquid, arapid temperature increase can result in DAN-GEROUS mists or boiling or spattering, whichmay cause an immediate VIOLENT there is any question regarding the use ofcaustic soda in a particular application, contactyour Dow case of emergencies involving exposures, leaks, or spills, call The Dow chemical Companyat: In the United States: (989) 636-4400 In Canada: (519) 339-3711 (Sarnia, Ontario) (780) 998-8282 (Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta)For transportation emergencies, in the CHEMTREC at 1-800-424-9300, and inCanada call CANUTEC at (613) 996-6666.

In all its forms, includingsolution form, Caustic soda is highly corrosive andcan cause serious burns to the eyes and skin. Eye contact of only a few seconds can cause perma-nent damage, even blindness. Short contact withthe skin can cause marked irritation or a chemicalburn. (See Danger on page 2.)The hazards of working with Caustic soda makeit important that all persons handling Caustic soda ,either directly or indirectly, know and follow strictprocedures for safety. Companies using causticsoda are urged to inform and train their employeeson appropriate safety practices and first safety meetings and safety inspectionsare recommended to minimize the hazards of causticsoda.

4 Safety meetings should serve to remind allemployees of the safe handling procedures youhave developed, ensure their compliance with theprecautions and practices required to handle causticsoda safely, and reinforce previous training in whatto do in the event of an Responsible Care CommitmentDow people around the world develop solutions for society based on Dow s inherent strength in science and technology. For over a decade, wehave embraced and advocated Responsible Care a voluntary, industry-wide commitment to safely handle our chemicals from inception in the laboratoryto ultimate disposal. This worldwide commitmenthelps consumers lead better lives, customers succeed, stockholders prosper, employeesachieve, and communities s chlor-alkali product and environmentalstewardship program is part of that worldwidecommitment. The stewardship program for causticsoda is a comprehensive program of safety litera-ture and materials, training aids, regulatory andenvironmental information, and other stewardshipresources available to all Dow customers.

While it does not look dangerous, havingthe appearance of water, eye contact of only a fewseconds can cause permanent damage, soda is odorless, so odor cannot serveas a warning. In addition, Caustic soda doesn tcause immediate pain when it comes in contactwith the skin, but it does cause immediate contact with the skin may cause marked irritation or a chemical bodily contact, Caustic soda will continueto attack and penetrate the eyes or skin (unlikeacids that coagulate protein to form a barrier).

7 Thismeans that: Following eye contact, you must start washingwith water immediately to prevent permanentdamage. Therefore, eyewash fountains shouldbe located near any Caustic soda handling area. Following skin contact, you must start washingwith water immediately to prevent slow-healingchemical burns. Therefore, safety showers shouldbe located directly above the eyewash Clothing and EquipmentAll personnel handling Caustic soda must wear theproper protective clothing. For additional information, review Pamphlet 065 from The Chlorine page 3 for ordering handling Caustic soda must always wearclose-fitting chemical worker s safety gogglesand chemical resistant clothing and equipment may berequired, depending on the job. See Figure 1. Itis the responsibility of the facility using causticsoda Solution to perform a job safety analysis todetermine the proper Personal ProtectiveEquipment (PPE) for the task being options may include: Hard hat. chemical resistant apron. Full face shield (in addition to chemical worker s safety goggles).

8 chemical resistant boots. chemical protective suit (jacket and pants). The jacket should be buttoned up to the neck, the trousers worn outside the boots, and theshirt sleeves sealed at the glove unless a jobsafety analysis determines it is acceptable forthe sleeve to be worn over the glove. All personnel handling bulk Caustic soda must wear properprotective clothing. Safety goggles and chemical resistant gloves are required at all times. A hard hat, face shield, chemical protective suit, and chemicalresistant boots may be required for some jobs. Duringan emergency, a full chemical protective suit with hoodand an air supplied respirator may also be should be thoroughly trained regardingthe hazards of Caustic soda before starting anywork involving the material (unloading, storage, transferring, production, maintenance, lab testing, etc.)

9 All such activities should be carefullyplanned in advance, and all planned proceduresmust be carefully 1/13/04 1:45 PM Page 45 First Aid: What to do in case of an accidentSpill Cleanup and Waste DisposalCaustic soda must be removed as quickly as possible after bodily contact by washing with wateronly. Do not use soap. Do not attempt to neutralizethe Caustic soda with chemicals. Continue washingfor 30 minutes or until advised to cease by a physician. It is important to immediately contact aphysician for any exposure to Caustic advice of the physician. It is imperative that youbegin to wash with water as soon as possible. Anytime lost prior to such washing with water couldcause serious and irreparable damage! Eyewash fountains should be located near anycaustic soda handling area. Safety showers shouldbe located directly above the eyewash Eyes:Wash immediately with water under lowpressure from an eyewash fountain. After handshave been thoroughly rinsed, hold the eyelidsopen and continue washing for 30 minutes oruntil advised otherwise by a Body:Wash immediately with water from asafety shower.

10 Wash the affected skin withwater for 30 minutes. Remove clothing whileshowering. If the eyes have not been exposed,do not remove your goggles until your head andhair have been thoroughly rinsed, otherwise, Caustic soda could be washed into the your head thoroughly, then remove thegoggles, and complete Ingestion (swallowing):Do not induce drink large quantities of milk(preferable) or water and call a Clothing:Wash contaminated clothing to removecaustic soda before reuse. Contaminated shoesand leather items should be a physician immediately for any exposureto Caustic soda and start washing with water SAFETY PRECAUTIONS SECTION ON PAGE 4 BEFORE STARTING SPILLCLEANUP EFFORTS:Small Spills (in contained area) dilute with with weak (acetic) acid if up for reuse or Spills (in contained area) as much as possible to secure containers for reuse or dilute remaining Caustic with with weak (acetic) acid if up diluted and neutralized Solution forreuse or in Uncontained Areas ( , soil, gravel, etc.)
