THE COOKING CLUB - ESCA

GREETINGS FROM THE COOKING club Last term the first group of ESCA students completed a basic COOKING class. Over the course of 10 weeks, children from Primary 3 to 6 learned about COOKING and healthy food, discussed different types of ingredients and used various kitchen tools and appliances. At the end of the course, the children went home with well- deserved junior chef awards after having made some tasty appetizers, main dishes and desserts. The course provided the children with a solid basis for any future food education.

1 GREETINGS FROM THE COOKING club Last term the first group of ESCA students completed a basic COOKING class.

2 If nothing else, they can always help their parents in the kitchen! I hope the class was successful in communicating the joy of COOKING to our children and teaching them respect for food and the importance of a balanced diet, including ingredients, which perhaps they didn t like much before. For sure, we had a lot of fun in the kitchen, frying eggs, baking bread and flipping pancakes. For me, it was an honour to teach COOKING at ESCA and such a pleasure to see the children s enthusiasm and eagerness to show the results of their work to their parents at the end of each lesson.

3 The children certainly have reason to be proud! Some already tried the recipes on ESCA Newsletter for ESCA Parents and Friends | No: 29 / 2015- 16 10 April 2016 their own during the spring holiday and one of them mentioned he can now help the owner of restaurant Bella Italia :) Thank you lovely children for being such awesome students! Also, welcome to our new group of students, as the COOKING club continues in Term 3! Elvira Marquering, Parent, COOKING club Coordinator IB APRIL TRAIT I believe we all strive to be the best version of ourselves that we can be.

4 However, this is not always easy, simple, or at times obvious how to do. That s why April s IB Learner Profile, reflective, is such an important one for students and educators alike to, well, reflect upon. Any educator worth the title of teacher will tell you that they reflect on their practice constantly. Each night, especially as a new teacher, thinking about what went well, what went poorly, and how to make it better the next day. For students, too, we want them to begin a reflective practice in which they are thinking about what they are learning, and even further, thinking about their thinking (metacognition), their actions, and on how they can improve.

5 Educators who encourage students to be reflective are also promoting students to be more fully engaged in the process of making meaning, acting as facilitators in the process of students moving beyond simply being consumers of knowledge to being producers, synthesizers, and creators of knowledge. Being a reflective person can also have huge benefits in increasing one s emotional intelligence, in understanding others, and in developing one s creative thinking skills. Therefore, I would encourage everyone to take some time this month to reflect on how they are being reflective and enjoy the benefits to come.
