Entry level wines with the simple Bordeaux orBordeaux Sup rieur appelations are produced throughout the Gironded partement in south-western France.

4 On the left bank of the Gironde, theM doc and Haut-M doc, Cabernet-Sauvignon sets the tone with wines of finesseand structure. On the right bank, notably in the St Emilion and Pomerol regions,Merlot calls the shots with wines of a more muscular and hearty style. Always one of our favourites, Cissacembodies much of what makes M docwines so special, with the addedattraction of a realistic the same management as itsnear neighbour Beychevelle in St Julien,Beaumont is one of the classiest of theCrus Bourgeois of the Haut-M gem of a property in the St Emilionsatellite of Montagne, Ch teauMontaiguillon regularly conjures upquality well above the Dordogne, facing StEmilion, Ch teau Bel Air produces afamily of fruit driven wines, a firm wellstructured red.

7 White wines are from Chardonnay, redsare from Pinot Noir, and in the south, Beaujolaisis from Gamay. Otherwise it's all about what theFrench call 'terroir', in effect the geology of thevineyard, in terms of aspect, slope, soil structure,altitude, and the interaction of these factors withthe local and well run, the familyestate of CH TEAU DEL'HESTRANGE at Blac at 550metres altitude is one of the highest inthe Beaujolais region. Their BeaujolaisVillages is a fine expression of theGamay grape, reaching a peak in theoak aged Hestrang res cuv e.

The range includes aChardonnay of exemplary nervosity,and a brisk and lively ros ofconsiderable harvested grapes from their 45year old Gamay vines provide the rawmaterial for DOMAINE DUGRIFFON's excellent C te the years the name & FILS hasbecome virtually synonymouswith that of Chablis being a big fish inwhat is a necessarily smallpond, Moreau makes wineswhich admirably capture theelusive charm of this northernoutpost of Burgundy,quintessentially clean.
