It s not too much to imagine that Jesus spoke these hard sayings more in sorrow than condemnation. Luke has assembled material found in different places in Matthew and prefaced it with the reminder that Jesus is on his way to Jerusalem. This provides an interpretative key for these sayings of Jesus. Facing increasing opposition and eventual denial and rejection he has made his choice.

2 He know how high the stakes are. He will not flinch, he will not flee. He has chosen to go through the Narrow door. He will not settle for easy companionship. Nor must those who want to enter the realm of God. 5 We continue this Sunday the retreat for the whole Parish . A retreat using the FIRST SPIRITUAL EXERCISES of St Ignatius Loyola (1491 1556) and adapted by Michael Hansen (1951 ). This weekend Fr John Reilly sj will give direction during the homily of all Parish Masses (and continuing next Sunday 28 August and concluding Sunday 4 September). This retreat is offered by Jesuits at Toowong & Faber CIS to the Parish as part of the celebrations of 100 years of Jesuit presence in Toowong. Retreat commitment is four weeks, with 25 40 min s of prayer 4 days a week, prefer-ably Monday Thursday. This is followed by the Sunday Eucharist and its weekend exercise. It adds up to about 22 days. While this is a serious commitment, and a time of grace, please consider making this commitment during the month of August. - Fr John Reilly sj.
