THE NUMBER line AUGUST 2006 Louisiana Association of Teachers of Mathematics An Affiliate of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics S MESSAGE Dear Friends and Colleagues, I hope that you had the opportunity to recharge over the summer and are as excited as I am to begin a new school year. In addition to the fresh start opportunities of a new school year and the chance to share meaningful mathematical experiences with students, this year is exciting for several reasons. Now that we have had the opportunity to use the Comprehensive Curriculum for an entire academic year, we may reflect on how it impacted our students and the adjustments needed to allow the curriculum to better meet our students needs. Making modifications is a part of preparation that cannot be undertaken alone. Collaboration within the district, school, and grade levels is necessary to make allowed adjustments to serve the students in the individual classroom.

1 THE NUMBER line AUGUST 2006 Louisiana Association of Teachers of Mathematics An Affiliate of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics S MESSAGE Dear Friends and Colleagues, I hope that you had the opportunity to recharge over the summer and are as excited as I am to begin a new school year.

2 As you prepare for lessons, I hope you will visit our website, , to take advantage of the resources there. Another valuable online resource is the Illuminations website, This section of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics website allows users to search for lessons by grade level and strand. Our website also has information and registration forms for another exciting event. On October 19-21, 2006, LATM and LSTA are holding a joint conference, Energize Learning with Math and Science, in Shreveport. This will allow attendees to attend two conferences for the price and travel of one! After the sessions are over, the area offers shopping and dining experiences to make the trip even better. You may view some of these by using the website for the convention and tourist bureau, I hope that you will also take advantage of mini-conferences and meetings that are scheduled in your area by local affiliates. These conferences allow teachers to reenergize, network, and gather ideas for lessons and classroom management.

3 The start of each new year provides us all with new students that we are charged with serving and providing meaningful mathematical experiences throughout the year. This responsibility is one that can be overwhelming and is best pursued collaboratively. That is where LATM can assist in networking, communication, and professional growth. I hope that you will allow LATM to serve as a resource in these areas. Have a great year and I hope to see in you in Shreveport. As always, please let me know if I can help in any way. Sincerely, LATM NEWSLETTER, August 2006, page 1 Jeremy Muse 2006 Joint LATM & LSTA Conference Energize Learning with Math and Science Have you registered? Made plans to visit with colleagues?
