6 " ,Clerk of the Northern District of THE READER--As many false reports have been circulated respecting the followingwork, and also many unlawful measures taken by the evil designingpersons to destroy me, and also the work, I would inform you that Itranslated, by the gift and power of God, and caused to be written, onehundred and sixteen pages, thewhich I took from the book of Lehi, whichwas an account abridged from the plates of Lehi, by the hand of Mormon ;which said account, some person or persons have stolen and kept fromme, notwithstanding my utmost exertions to recover it again--and beingcommanded of the Lord that I should translate the same over again, forSatan had put it into their hearts to tempt the Lord their God, by altering thewords, that they did read contrary from that which I translated and causedto be written.

7 And If I should bring forth the same words again, or in otherwords, if I should translate the same over again, they would publish thatwhich they had stolen, and Satan would stir up their hearts of thisgeneration, that they might not receive this work: but behold, the Lord saidunto me, I will not suffer that Satan shall accomplish his evil design in thisthing: therefore thou shalt translate from the plates of Nephi, until ye cometo that which ye have translated, which ye have retained; andCopyright 2003, Rights ReservedRelease: ye shall publish it as the record of Nephi; and thus I will confoundthose who have altered my words. I will not suffer that they shall destroy mywork; yea, I will shew unto them that my wisdom is greater than the cunningof the Devil. Wherefore, to be obedient unto the commandments of God, Ihave, through his grace and mercy, accomplished that which he hathcommanded me respecting this thing.

8 I would also inform you that theplates of which hath been spoken, were found in the township ofManchester, Ontario county, FIRST book OF REIGN AND account of Lehi and his wife Sariah, and his four Sons, being called,(beginning at the eldest,) Laman, Lemuel, Sam, and Nephi. The Lordwarns Lehi to depart outof the land of Jerusalem, because heprophesieth unto the people concerning their iniquity; and they seek todestroy his life. He taketh three days journey into the wilderness with hisfamily. Nephi taketh his brethren and returns to the land of Jerusalemafter the record of the Jews. The account of their sufferings. They takethe daughters of Ishmael to wife. They take their families and depart intothe wilderness. Their sufferings and afflictions in the wilderness. Thecourse of their travels. They come to the large waters.

9 Nephi's brethrenrebelled against him. He confounded them, and buildeth a Ship. Theycall the place Bountiful. They cross the large waters into the promisedland, &c. This is according to the account of Nephi; or in other words, INephi wrote this ,NEPHI, having been born of goodly parents, therefore I was taughtsomewhat in all the learning of my father; and having seen many afflictionsin the course of my days--nevertheless, having been highly favored of theLord in all mydays; yea, having had a great knowledge of the goodnessand the mysteries of God, therefore I make a record of my proceedings inmy days; yea, I make a record in the language of my father, which consistsof the learning of the Jews and the language of theEgyptians.
