2 This Sunday at St john s is the annual weekend in which we mark the Relationship between St john s and St john s School and our twin community in Legho Village, Tanzania, at our Sunday Masses. A NOTE OF THANKS FROM THE APOSTLESHIP OF THE SEA: Roland Hayes writes: We are very grateful indeed for your support for the work of the Apostleship of the Sea, and in particular for holding our Sea Sunday Appeal. As ever, you have been very generous, both financially and in prayer. We very much appreciate this, so please accept our thanks. Knowing that a stranger is thinking and praying for them gives seafarers great solace in what can be hard and lonely lives. Seafarers keep us all in their prayers and often express to port chaplains and ship visitors their gratitude to the parishioners of Great Britain. It is your PARISHES support that allows our port chaplains to care pastorally for the seafarers who come to our shores. The stories of some of those at sea can really be heart breaking, but this news is hardly ever brought to the public s knowledge.

3 Loneliness is a very big factor as they miss out on family life and children miss seeing their parent for months at a time. Many seafarers are from Catholic countries, such as the Philippines, and they miss the sacraments such as Mass and Confession. May God continue to bless you and your PARISHES abundantly for giving from the heart. The next Baptismal Preparation Course takes place from to in the Parish House on Wednesday 3 and Wednesday 10 October. If you wish to come on it, please contact Fr Jock. Dalriada Conversation - "Catalan identity: perspectives and understandings" Wednesday 26 September from 8 to 10pm with Oonagh O Brien and Antonio Sanchez Catalan identity and politics arrived at the forefront of world attention with the dramatic demonstrations and events leading up to the referendum in 2017. The events taking place there have a special significance for Scotland. This Conversation will not aim to provide an accurate and up-to-date presentation on the current political and legal situation so much as to open up a space for a discussion about the nature of national identity, self independence and cultural and personal affiliations in Catalonia. Oonagh O Brien (a parishioner and a member of the St john s Children s Liturgy Team) is an anthropologist who carried out fieldwork in a small village in the Pyrenees on Catalan identity during the 1980s under the supervision of the late Dr Josep Llobera, a leading Catalan writer on identity and nationalism.

7 She was subsequently a lecturer in Anthropology at the Universitat Autonoma in Barcelona. Antonio Sanchez carried out his PhD on contemporary Spanish culture in the 1990s, at the end of the so-called transition period . He has been lecturing and researching on modern and contemporary Spanish culture at the Universities of London and Stirling. He grew up in a provincial Catalan town until moving to the UK in the 1980s. Our Conversation is at the Dalriada (77 Promenade, EH15 2EL) on Wednesday 26th September, from 8pm to 10pm. As usual the room will be available from 7:30 and we'll have a break around 9. A Quiz Night for Scottish Churches Housing Action - Wednesday 3 October.
