1 The Sustainable Development GoalsAt the historic UN General Assembly Summit inSeptember 2015, the 2030 Agenda forSustainable Development was adopted by theUN s 193 member states. The 17 SustainableDevelopment Goals (SDGs) and their 169targets are part of this Sustainable Development Goals are a bold,universal agreement to end poverty and all itsdimensions and craft an equal, just and secureworld for people , planet and SDGs have been developed through anunprecented consultative process that broughtnational governments and millions of citizensfrom the globe together to negotiate andadopt this ambitious and the SDGsFAO has played a key role in the post 2015development agenda process and has beenan active contributor to the Inter-agency andExpert Group on Sustainable Development Goalindicators. Its Strategic Objectives are aligned toachieving the SDGs relevant to its focuses on monitoring of six Goals : SDGs 2,5, 6, 12, 14 and 15. Compiling the globallyagreed indicators to monitor the progresson the SDGs is a great challenge for membercountries with regard to their current dataavailability, statistical capacity and is therefore assisting countries throughactions that will help mainstream the Goals innational Development planning, implementactivities to achieve them, and monitor andreport progress through globally and a sample of FAO actions forthese six Goals are included in this custodian of the 21 indicators attached tothe Goals , FAO is engaged in methodologicaldevelopment and providing technicalassistance to countries to build their statisticalcapacity.
