1 POSTOPERATIVE INSTRUCTIONS FOR CYSTOSCOPY A ND TRANSURETHRAL BLADDER TUMOR RESECTION (TURBT) 24 hours postop: Do not drive a car or operate machinery for 24 ho urs after anesthe sia. Do not make important decisions or sign any important papers during thi s time. Do not consume al cohol, tranquilizers, sleeping medication or a ny no n- prescription medication f or 24 ho urs after anesthe sia or if taki ng a pain medication. Bladder symptoms: You may have a chemotherapy agent called mitomycin C in the bl adder for one ho ur after surgery. This can hel p decrease the risk of re currence of bl adder ca nc er.
2 It will be drained before you g o home. You may have a catheter in place f or s everal days to a llow the bladder time to heal. It is important to k eep the cathe ter well secure d to the leg and avoid any tu gging on the catheter. It is no rmal to bl ood, debris and small blood cl ots in the ur ine f or one to two weeks after surgery. You may feel burning and sting ing wi th ur ination f or the first several weeks after surgery. It is also common to have more frequent ur ination a nd a greater sense of the ur ge to ur inate. Diet: After anesthe sia , begin with clear liquids. Avoid any heavy meals on the day of the proced ur e.
3 You may slowly resume y our normal diet. Drink plenty of water. The more blood you see in the ur ine, the more water you should dri nk to fl ush the system and keep clots fr om forming. Activity: Avoid strenuous a ctivi ty or heavy lifti ng until the blood in the ur ine has cle ared for s everal days. Then slowly resume y our normal activity. You may shower. Medication: You can obtain good pain relief by taki ng acetamino phen (Tyle no l) every four ho urs while awake for the first s everal days. You w ill also get a prescription f or pain pill s. You can use t he se prescription pain pills in addition to acetamino phen every four hours.
4 Do not exceed 4000 mg acetamino phen per day. Y ou may also place a heating pad over the bl adder to ease p ostop di scomfor t. Take plenty of fiber, water and over the counter stool softener to avoid straining for bowel movements or constipati on. Avoid aspirin or ib uprofen compound s, such as Advil, Nup ri n, Motri n, Bufferin, e tc. until the bl ood in the ur ine has cleared for s everal days. Postop plan: Call the offi ce to make an appointment in 7 to 10 days if you d o not already have a postop appointment. Ca ll the offi ce f or f ever over 101oF or in abili ty to ur inate.
