Thermoplastic composite materials made from carbon and glass fibersUnique integrated value chain SGL Group covers the complete value chain of Thermoplastic composite materials : from precursors via carbon fibers with Thermoplastic sizing to impregnated unidirectional tapes (UD-tapes), customized organo sheets and long fiber-reinforced thermoplast (LFT) compounds for flexible manufacturing of high-performance Thermoplastic composite fiber-reinforced plastics are high-performance mate-rials with unique properties. They can be used where other materials have reached their limits and are indispensable in many industries today, for lightweight components with ultra-high strength and stiffness for aerospace applications.
Due to their potential to reduce cycle time and cost of manufacturing these materials are now finding their way into industrial large scale production. Our new Thermoplastic semi-finished materials are ideally used to produce composite components in processes with short cycle times. In order to fully utilize this performance potential our tapes and sheets can be further processed with automated tape laying machines or thermoforming processes combined with back injection our comprehensive production, material and application know-how we can offer to our customers tailor- made solutions to meet their product and process carbon fiber for Thermoplastic compositesThanks to a special sizing developed by us, the carbon fibers can be optimally bonded to the Thermoplastic matrix.
In this way, the high stiffness and strength of the carbon fiber can be fully transferred to products and their components. Our innovative fiber is suitable for diverse Thermoplastic production chains and shows good spreading behavior for textile material base for customized solutionstimes. Customized products reinforced with carbon or glass fibers are available with a wide range of matrix materials in order to enable our customers bringing applications with the competitive edge into the market:Automotive industry UD-tapes and individually stacked organo sheets are ideally used in products for applications such as lightweight car body and structural components. In combination with thermo- forming and back injection molding our materials enable high production goods Sporting goods with unique lightness and strength allow athletes to maximize their performance.
Medical applications such as leg braces benefit from the stiffness to weight ratio. Individual organo sheets with UD or woven layups help to design high class surface structures and visual goods High impact strength, damping properties and good chemical resistance to various substances play a role in various appli-cations for mechanical engineering. Our materials are easily processed to complex parts with state of the art tape laying of Thermoplastic composites Excellent mechanical properties with the combination of carbon and glass fibers with performance polymers Readymade, pre-impregnated semi-finished materials Automated production and processing technologies available Production of components in short cycle times Thermoplastics offer the possibility of hybrid material solutions and facilitate product manufacture by making components weldable Unlimited transport and storage at room temperature Integration of new repair concepts for a sustainable product lifecycle and improved customer services New recycling routes due to re-moldable material Innovative solutions in Thermoplastic compositesThe SGL Group Thermoplastic material portfolio is based on our SIGRAFIL carbon fiber with Thermoplastic compatible sizing.

All materials are available with carbon fiber or glass fiber reinforcement. With a comprehensive portfolio of materials and services we bring integral solutions for Thermoplastic composites to our customers. High strength unidirectional tapesUD-tapes are flat structures which contain spread, unidirec-tional fiber filaments evenly distributed and embedded in the Thermoplastic matrix of choice. The reinforcing fiber used for this polyamide 6-based UD-tape is our SIGRAFIL C Also glass fiber-based UD-tapes with compatible silane sizing are available. Our tapes are usually delivered on spools with a core diameter of 3 or 6 . Of course we can take into account special spool requirements for our customers' processing equipment.
Customized organo sheetsOrgano sheets contain many layers of fibers and the fiber layup can be tailored to the desired load case and laminate thickness. Our standard sheet dimensions are 600 x 400 mm and 350 x 200 mm. Other formats are available on request. Organo sheets are typically manufactured using our UD-tapes to ensure optimal mechanical performance.
