Antonyms and synonyms Antonyms - are words that have opposite meanings. Synonyms - are words that have similar meanings Author s Purpose Persuade Inform Entertain The author is trying to get you to think in a certain way. To convince you to buy something or do something. To teach you something. To provide you with information, or instructions about how to do something. To entertain you or make you laugh. Fiction writing that will amuse you, and keep your interest. Figurative Language Simile - A comparison using as or like Ex. He is as fast as a cheetah.

3 The girl could jump like a kangaroo! Metaphor - Making an unrelated comparison without the use of as or like Ex. The storm is a monster. John is a walking dictionary. Personification- Describing something non-human performing hu man actions or having human characteristics. Ex. The pen danced across her paper. The swimming pool is calling my name. Alliteration - A series of two or more words having the same beginning letter or same beginning sound. Ex. Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers. Seashells along the sea shore. Point of View Let's review Point of View. First-person Point of View A character in the story is the narrator. This character is telling the story. The narrator uses the pronouns I, me and we. In first-person point of view, readers learn about events as the narrator learns about them. Third -person Point of View The story is being told by an outside observer - someone who is not in the story.

4 The author uses the pronouns he , she, and they. In Third -person point of view, the author can tell about the thoughts, actions, and feelings of the other characters. Poetry terms Stanza - A section or division of a poem: specifically a grouping of lines that develops an idea. Rhyme - When two words sound the same. Usually at the end of the word. Rhythm or meter- The pattern of beats or a series of stressed and unstressed syllables identified in a poem. Form - Lines of poetry having the same rhythms or rhymes in a pattern throughout a poem.
