O CARROLL 2 The Third Sunday on Ordinary Time January 23, 2022 Dear Friends, On this Third Sunday in Ordinary Time, we read the first four verses of Luke s gospel before finding Jesus in the synagogue in Nazareth reading from Isaiah, The Spirit of the Lord is upon me .. Our parish patron addresses his gospel and the Acts of the Apostles to Theophilus, a name that means friend of God or beloved by God. Scholars aren t really sure who Theophilus was .. was he a roman official or a lawyer or a priest? Or is it an honorary title that includes all of us who are a friend of God or beloved by God. We are still at the beginning of the public ministry of Jesus.

6 We can be certain that St. Luke will inspire us and renew us as we read from his gospel during Year C of Sunday readings. On Tuesday this week we celebrate the Feast of the Conversion of St. Paul. SAUL was a fervent Jew who persecuted the church until he encountered the Lord on the road to Damascus. His name was changed to PAUL and he became the Apostle to the Gentiles, bringing the Good News of Jesus to non-Jews in Greece and Turkey and elsewhere before being beheaded in Rome. The church traditionally sees this feast as a time to focus on Christian Unity. Before He died, Jesus prayed that we might all be one. Unfortunately, Christians are divided not just east and west, but there are many different ecclesial communities that call themselves Christian but are at odds with the Roman catholic church and other Christian churches. We join our hearts and voices with all people of faith, that the prayer of Jesus will one day be fulfilled and we will be one in the Lord.

7 Next Sunday begins catholic Schools Week. We recently celebrated the memorials of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton and St. John Neumann, two American saints who saw the value of parochial schools and helped catholic Schools to expand in the early 19th century. In 1884 the US bishops convened the Third Plenary Council of Baltimore during which they made catholic education a clear priority for all parishes in the country. Through the 1900 s religious communities of men and women were established and grew to dedicate themselves to catholic education in the United States. Today, we primarily rely on the sacrifices and dedication of catholic laypeople to continue the great legacy of catholic education into the 21st century.

8 catholic Schools Week will give us the opportunity to show our respect and gratitude to the faculty and staff of St. Luke School. Without their willingness to dedicate themselves to catholic education we would never be able to provide our excellent academic and faith-based program to the families of Whitestone. Please help us spread the good news of St. Luke School! The wearing of masks continues to be an issue here at St. Luke. Dealing with the public is not easy! Most people are very willing to comply with the NYS mandate and properly wear the mask when attending liturgies. Others wear the mask on their face without properly covering their nose and mouth. Still others are belligerent about wearing masks and give ushers and other ministers a hard time. People call the rectory bringing their concerns to our attention. As you know, Jessica makes the announcement every week before Mass begins asking all those present to wear a mask.

9 Please remember that ushers are volunteers who are trying to serve the community, but most do not want to get into a verbal confrontation with others about wearing masks while they, too, are trying to pray. In charity I ask everyone to please properly wear their masks in church to ease tensions among us and to show respect for one another. With love and prayers, Fr. John Costello 3 ST.
