Approved for public release; distribution is , DEPARTMENT OF THE ARMY JUNE 2004 TM 5-2330-325-14&POPERATOR S, UNIT, AND DIRECT SUPPORTMAINTENANCE MANUALWITHREPAIR PARTS AND SPECIAL TOOLS LIST (RPSTL)FORTRAILER, MEDIUM HEAVY EQUIPMENT TRANSPORTER (MHET),40 TON, M870A3(NSN 2330-01-458-2061)a TM 5-2330-325-14&PFOR INFORMATION ON FIRST AID, REFER TO FM 21-11. Compressed air used for cleaning or drying purposes, or for clearing restrictions, should never exceed 30 psi (207 kPa).

Wear protective clothing (goggles/shield,gloves, etc.) and use caution to avoid injury to personnel. Air under 100 psi (690 kPa) is used in the operation of the air brake system. Seriousinjury or death can result if precautions are not SAFETYCOMPRESSED AIR Hearing protection is required for personnel when performing any function on theM870A3 when Prime Mover is in use. Failure to do so could result in injury topersonnel. The M870A3 Semitrailer should always have the wheels chocked, with or withouta load, during coupling or uncoupling to prime mover and when parked.

Failureto not chock the wheels may result in injury or death to personnel. Before putting hand to hub, hold hand close to hub to check for excessive heatradiation. Hub may be hot. This will prevent skin burns caused by hot metal. If installing a new brake air chamber, make sure it is caged prior to to do so could result in serious injury to personnel or damage to equipment. To avoid injury to personnel or damage to equipment, make sure brakes are cagedprior to performing maintenance on slack adjuster.

Always use jack stands, dunnage, or other field expedient means to support thetrailer when removing a tire and wheel assembly. Serious injury can result if thejack fails and the trailer is not supported. Improper cleaning methods and use of unauthorized cleaning liquids or solventscan injure personnel and damage equipment. To prevent this, refer to TM 9-247 forfurther instructions. Unless otherwise specified, perform all lubrication and preventive maintenancechecks with trailer on level ground, uncoupled, and brakes set.

Failure to followthis warning may result in injury or death to personnel. Solvents can burn easily, can give off harmful vapors, and are harmful to skin andclothing. To avoid injury or death, keep away from open fire and use in a well-ventilated area. If solvent gets on skin or clothing, wash immediately with soap andwater. Due to the dimensions and center of gravity of some loads, proper procedures mustbe followed when loading and unloading equipment to prevent damage toequipment and injury to personnel.

During slack adjuster maintenance (para. 4-49e), ensure brake drum moves freelyafter completing step 4 (backing off adjusting screw [4] 3/4 turn). Brake drum shouldmove freely. Failure to do so could result in damage to equipment and seriousinjury to TM 5-2330-325-14&P All persons not involved in coupling/uncoupling operation must stand clear ofprime mover and trailer to prevent serious injury. Never stand between the prime mover and trailer when the prime mover is beingbacked up to the trailer. Serious injury or death my result.

Do not climb on trailer to operate the Hydraulic System Control Levers. Failure todo so could result in injury to personnel. Use of step stool may be required. Trailer and prime mover may roll when brake is released. To prevent injury topersonnel or damage to equipment, the driver must remain in the cab of the primemover. Always ensure that the trailer is coupled to the prime move and all parking brakesare set. Failure to do so may result in serious injury or death. If welding trailer, it must be uncoupled from prime mover.

Failure to follow thiswarning may damage electronic When troubleshooting an electrical malfunction or performing electricalmaintenance, ALWAYS disconnect inter-vehicular electrical cable from towingvehicle. Failure to do so may result in injury or death due to electric shock. Remove all power to trailer prior to making any repairs on the electrical to do so may result in serious injury or death. Although battery ground cable must be connected in order to test electrical circuitvoltage, disconnect battery ground cable from prime mover before performingresistance tests or replacing parts.

This will prevent shock to personnel, anddamage to parts and equipment. DO NOT touch heat shrinkable tubing for at least 30 seconds after heating. Heatshrinkable tubing is hot and will burn SYSTEMWARNINGLOADING/UNLOADING OPERATION All persons not involved in the loading or unloading operation must stand clear ofprime mover and trailer to prevent serious injury. Due to the dimensions and center of gravity of some loads, proper procedures mustbe followed when loading and unloading equipment to prevent damage toequipment and injury to personnel.

Visibility from the prime mover is significantly reduced when backing, whether thetrailer is loaded or not. Proper procedures must be followed and extreme cautionused when backing to prevent damage to equipment and injury to personnel. Outriggers are only designed to stabilize payload. Payload must be fullysupported by trailer load bed. Supporting a payload on the outriggers mayresult in equipment failure and injury to personnel. Improper load placement can have a detrimental effect on braking, evasivemaneuvers, and handling characteristics of a tractor trailer vehicle TM 5-2330-325-14&P Use extreme caution when handling heavy parts.
