GENERAL1. Scopea. This manual contains instructions foroperation, organizational, field, and depotmaintenance of compass, magnetic, un-mounted: Appendix I contains a list of currentreferences, including supply and technicalmanuals, forms, and other available pub-lications applicable to compass Appendix II contains a basic issueitem list required for stockage by firstechelon maintenance and includes thosecomponents, with quantities thereof, con-stituting the major item. It also lists firstechelon equipment and spare parts all ofwhich constitute the major end item forissue to users. The list also includesmaintenance parts and equipment, withquantities thereof, required for organiza-tional, field and depot maintenance of themajor end item and its Appendix III contains a maintenanceallocation chart which lists maintenanceresponsibilities allocated to each echelonof This first edition is being publishedin advance of complete technical direct reporting of errors, omissions, and recommendations for improving thisequipment -manual by the individual useris authorized and encouraged.

DA Form2028 will be used for reporting these im-provements. This form may be completedusing pencil, pen or typewriter. DA Forms2028 will be completed in triplicate andforwarded by the individual using the man-ual. The original and one copy will beforwarded direct to the Commanding Offi-cer, Frankford Arsenal, ATTN: SMUFA-3100, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania information copy will be provided tothe individuals immediate maintenance AllocationThe maintenance of compass M2 doesnot require the use of tools and will beperformed as reflected in the maintenanceallocation chart (app. III).3. Form, Records, and Reportsa. General. Responsibility for theproper execution of forms, records, andreports rests upon the commanding offi-cers of all units maintaining this equip-ment.

However, the value of accuraterecords must be fully appreciated by allpersons responsible for their compilation, maintenance , and use. Records, reports, and authorized forms are normally utilizedto indicate the type, quantity, and condi-tion of materiel to be inspected or re-placed. Properly executed forms conveyauthorization and serve as records forreplacement of materiel in the hands Authorized Forms. The forms gen-erally applicable to units operating ormaintaining this materiel are listed inappendix I. For instructions on the use ofthese forms refer to TM 38-750, FM 9-3and FM 9-4, For a listing of all forms, refer to DA Pam Field Reports of Accidents. The re-ports necessary to comp1y with. therequirements of the Army safety programare prescribed in detail in AR.

Reports are required whenever ac-cidents involving injury to personnel ordamage to materiel Equipment Improvements Recom-mendations. Deficiencies detected in theequipment or materials should be reportedusing the Equipment Improvement Recom-mendation section of DA Form II. DESCRIPTION AND DATA4. Descriptiona. General. Unmounted magnetic com-pass M2 (figs. 1 and 2) is a multiple pur-pose instrument applicable to obtainingclinometer, angle of site, and azimuthreadings. The body of the compass isdustproof and moisture proof, and is madeof nonmagnetic material except for themagnetic needle and its pivot. When thecover is closed, the magnetic needle isautomatically lifted from its pivot to pro-tect the pivot point and jewel jewel bearing is agate.

The compassis provided with an angle of site scale andan azimuth scale. The azimuth scale maybe rotated approximately 1,800 mils. Thecompass is equipped with circular andtubular levels. In place of a telescope, the compass employs front and rear leafsights in conjunction with a mirror in thecover for sighting and reading the instrument has an azimuth scale ad-juster for orienting the azimuth scale tothe local magnetic declination, so thatgrid or Y azimuths may be read Angle of Sight Mechanism and Re-lated Parts. Rotation of the level lever(fig. 6) causes tie elevation level andelevation scale index to rotate as a index clamps against the bottom pieceto prevent the mechanism from movingunless actuated by the level Magnetic Needle and Lifting magnetic needle provides amagnetic north direction for orienting pur-poses.
