DescriptionThe Electro-Voice Sx300 is a 300-watt,12-inch two-way, high-efficiency, con-stant-directivity compact speaker systemwith Ring-Mode Decoupling (RMDTM).Through the extensive use of computer-aideddesign and modeling, Electro-Voice engi-neers have developed a state-of-the-art pro-fessional loudspeaker high-frequency section of the Sx300utilizes a molded-in, 65 x 65 constant-di-rectivity horn. This unique pattern contrib-utes to high intelligibility. Vocals sound natu-ral yet cut through in reverberant, noisyrooms. In addition, the coverage pattern isunusually uniform over its range of opera-tion. Sound quality off axis is very wellmaintained, even at 45 off axis (a 90 totalcoverage angle), well beyond the rated cov-erage angle. The horn s unique, VaripathTMthroat geometry helps direct driver output tothe corners of the room, points of coveragenot described in the usual specifications ofhorizontal and vertical coverage angles, andparts of the audience that typically do notreceive the strongest of the many other unique features ofthe Sx300 is the cabinet.

Constructed of high-impact polypropylene structural foam, it pro-vides a stiff and extremely durable enclo-sure. Molded into the cabinet are an integralcarrying handle and a stand socket formounting on 1 3/8-inch stands such as theElectro-Voice 100BK. Rubber feet that areattached to the bottom of the cabinet and mat-ing sockets that are molded into the top pro-vide a means of stacking systems. The trap-ezoidal-shaped cabinet, in combination withthe uniform, 65 x 65 directivity character-istics, make the Sx300 ideal for use alone orin situations requiring additional bass out-put, the Sx300 can be used in combinationwith the Electro-Voice Xp200A system con-troller. The Xp200A includes a low-fre-quency enhancement circuit that is tailoredto match the low-frequency characteristicsof the Sx300. Up to 12 dB of additional bassoutput can be obtained from the system whenused with the Xp200A system controller.

Theamount of low-frequency enhancement canbe adjusted to suit the user s personal the most demanding situations, two bass-module models are available to complement theSx300: the Electro-Voice Sb121 nonpoweredbass module and the Electro-Voice Sb121a pow-ered bass module. Both bass modules were de-signed to be used with the Sx300 and areconstructed in similar structural foam enclo-sures. The Sb121a includes a 300-watt poweramplifier that is built into the speaker cabi-net. The Xp200A system controller providesa subwoofer output that is a crossed-oversum of the left and right Sx300 s high-frequency horn is drivenby the DH2010A one-inch-throat, wide-bandwidth, titanium-diaphragm driver. TheDH2010A uses a unique, convex-driveTime PathTM phasing plug structure ( #4,525,604) for smooth and ex-tended high-frequency performance. Thevoice coil is coupled to the diaphragm withEV s exclusive Resonant DriveTM technol-ogy.

This increases and smooths the high-frequency response and reduces the amountof internal equalization required for flat fre-quency response. Driver output extends to25,000 Hz. A self-resetting high-frequencyprotection circuit, EV s PROTM circuit, isincluded with the Sx300 to prevent againstaccidental overdrive and improve systemreliability. If the input power to the high-fre-quency driver exceeds the nominal rating, the protection circuit is activated and reducesSx300300-Watt Two-WayCompact SpeakerSystem Ring-Mode Decoupling (RMDTM) forincreased intelligibility Durable structural-foam enclosure withintegral handles and stand mount DL12Sx 12-inch woofer and DH2010 Acompression driver for great sound andreliable performance Molded-in constant-directivity 65 x 65 high-frequency horn Stand mountable and arrayable Molded-in attachment points for securesuspension with optional brackets Dual Neutrik Speakon high-currentconnectors (Sx300E) or 1/4-in.

The woofer isa DL12Sx 12-inch Pro-Line unit featuringberyllium copper lead wires, a low-mass,edge-wound voice coil and high-temperaturematerials. The system combines profes-sional-quality components, arranged in atime-coherent vertical array, with an unusu-ally durable Thiele-Small-aligned vented en-closure. The result is clear and articulate,high-quality Decoupling (RMDTM)The Sx300 controls both acoustical and me-chanical ring modes to provide dramaticallyincreased intelligibility, using techniqueslearned from the development of the Elec-tro-Voice X-Array concert is much less coloration of the soundfrom resonating sources, leaving only the in-tended sound to be heard by the ResponseThe combination of a 12-inch woofer, wide-bandwidth high-frequency driver and anequalized crossover results in the wide andsmooth overall response shown in Figure response was measured at 10 feet, us-ing a 4-volt input in an anechoic chamber, and was measured using a swept sine-waveinput.

No external equalization was 1 has been averaged and correctedfor 1 watt at 1 Speaker SystemThe crossover frequency and speaker com-ponent geometries have been selected so thatthe directional characteristics of the wooferand constant-directivity horn match at thecrossover frequency to create a special sys-tem type the constant-directivity within the 65 rated coverage angleis uniform, which means dependable audi-ence coverage without hot spots or deadzones at certain frequencies. The 65 disper-sion characteristic also helps avoid early re-flections from nearby floor or side-wall sur-faces which could degrade performance. Thecontrolled directivity of the high- and low-frequency transducers also eliminates re-sponse irregularities caused by diffraction offnearby enclosure edges. And, in combina-tion with an essentially flat on-axis frequencyresponse, produces a total acoustic poweroutput that is uniform with unique feature of the Sx300 is the con-stant-directivity dispersion provided by the65 x 65 horn.

The polar response of thesystem at selected one-third-octave band-widths is shown in Figure 2. These polar re-sponses were measured in an anechoic envi-ronment at 10 feet using one-third-octavepink-noise inputs. The frequencies selectedare fully representative of the polar responseof the system. Beamwidth of the system uti-lizing the complete one-third-octave polardata is shown in Figure 3. Rq and directivityindex (Di) are plotted in Figure Sx300 EnclosuresWARNING: Suspending any object is po-tentially dangerous and should only be at-tempted by individuals who have a thoroughknowledge of the techniques and regula-tions of rigging objects overhead. Electro-Voice strongly recommends that the Sx300be suspended taking into account all cur-rent national, federal, state and local regu-lations. It is the responsibility of the installerto ensure the Sx300 is safely installed inaccordance with all such regulations.

If theSx300 is suspended, Electro-Voice stronglyrecommends that the system be inspectedat least once a year. If any sign of weak-ness or damage is detected, remedial actionshould be taken manual entitled Suspending System 2000 TMLoudspeakers is included with every Sx300system. It gives a summary of the suspen-sion kits available and an idea of how eachkit is used. A brief overview, which illus-trates some approaches for single and mul-tiple suspension, is given here for the ben-efit of the system designer. Please refer toindividual suspension kit engineering datasheets for full details and safety first approach is to suspend an indi-vidual Sx300 enclosure. The four metricM8 x inserts (see Figure 5) which arebuilt into the enclosure allow the systemto be suspended using eyebolts (Mb100forged eyebolt attachment kit). Typicallyit will be necessary to attach two cables tothe top eyebolt and pull up on the rear.

TheMb200 wall/ceiling mounting bracket (seeFigure 7) encompasses the top and bottomof the enclosure and has additional featuresto make suspending the Sx300 easier andmore flexible. Electro-Voice recommends theuse of the Mb200 in all but the simplest situ-ations. The Mb200 has supplementary holesto allow the Sx300 to be attached to a wallor ceiling and aimed at an Mb200 bracket also allows the use ofOmniMount Series 100 mounting hardwareby providing three-hole-pattern groups com-patible with these support systems. WhenOmniMount Series 100 mounting hardwareis specified, the Mb200 bracket must firstbe attached to the speaker second approach is to suspend multipleSx300 enclosures. The Sx300 enclosure isnot designed to suspend multiple enclosuresfrom itself. If an array is required, thenmultiple Mb200 s must be used. Arrays maybe constructed vertically by daisy chaining two Mb200 s from each other.

The Mb300array bracket allows the easy and secure con-struction of horizontal arrays, using Mb200 sto support the CapacityTo our knowledge, Electro-Voice was thefirst manufacturer to develop and pub-lish a power test closely related to real-lifeconditions. First, we use a random-noise in-put signal because it contains many frequen-cies simultaneously, just like real voice orinstrument program. Second, our signal con-tains more energy at extremely high and lowfrequencies than typical actual program, add-ing an extra measure of reliability. Third, thetest signal includes not only the overall long-term average or continuous level which our ears interpret as loudness butalso short-duration peaks which are manytimes higher than the average, just like ac-tual program. The long-term average levelSx300 300-Watt Two-Way Compact Speaker SystemSx300 300-Watt Two-Way Compact Speaker Systemstresses the speaker thermally (heat).
