For the New School Year (2018-2019), this carry-over period ends Septem ber 28, 2018, unless a m eal application is approved. As per USDA regulations, if your child qualifies for lesser level m eal benefits (from free status to reduced-price status to reduced-price/ free status to paid status); these changes will take effect 10 days from the date of application approval. If your child qualifies for higher level m eal benefits (from paid/ reduced-price status to free status or paid status to reduced-price status), these changes will take effect im m ediately upon application approval. 5 Sym ptom s m ay vary. Som e children m ay generally not feel well, have no fever or a low grade fever, loss of appetite, headache, and stom achache. Diagnosis is m ade by a throat culture. Students m ay return to school 24 hours after antibiotics have been started. Early diagnosis and treatm ent are essential in preventing serious com plications. Because strep throat is spread like a cold, encourage your child to use good hygiene practices such as proper use and disposal of tissues, coughing/ sneezing into their elbow, frequent hand washing (including under fingernails), and keeping fingers and hands away from the face. These good practices will help decrease the likelihood of getting colds or strep throat. It is caused by a virus and appears as a raised rash to the palm s, soles and around the m outh and progresses to blisters. Swallowing m ay be painful. The virus is spread through droplets from the nose, m outh, or digestive system . It is m ost contagious during the first week of illness. Treatm ent is for sym ptom s only.* Please encourage your child to wash their hands at least 3-4 tim es a day at school and as soon as they get hom e. Teach your children not to touch their face, particularly their eyes, nose, and m outh. This is the way the m icroscopic germ s enter your body. 4
