At that time, innu-merable Buddhas and Maha-Bodhisattvas from infiniteworld-systems in the ten quarters of space convened har-moniously, admiring the fully Enlightened One, Sakya-muni, for His transcendental wisdom and infinite powersin guiding erring beings to understand the dissimilaritybetween the bases of happiness and sorrow in the all escorted their attendants to offer homage to theHonoured Honoured One smiled and radiated multi-radiantbeams of infinite compassion, supreme wisdom, benevo-7lence, etc.

, despatching forth into space sounds of the sixparamitas; sounds of infinite compassion; sounds of char-ity; sounds of emancipation; sounds of bliss; sounds oftranscendental wisdom; emitting lion-roars; emittinggreat lion-roars; emitting thunderous sounds; and a greatnumber of other indescribable sounds. Many beings fromthe ten quarters of space in this world and additionalworlds had assembled jointly at Trayastrimsa approached from celestial worlds such as the Catur-meharaja-kayikas the four Heavens of the four devakings, Trayastrimsa Heaven, Tusita Heaven, NirmanaratiHeaven, Paranirmita-vasavartin Heaven, BrahmaparisadyaHeaven, Brahmapurohitas Heaven, Mahabrahman Heavenand from numerous other devas, spirits and dragons from the seas had combinedtogether, as also beings from various worlds and thishuman world, such as spirits of the sea, storms, rivers, trees, hills, earth, spring, spirits of the fields, day, night, spirits of the empty spaces, the skies, of drink and food, spirits of the grass and woods, and all the other , there came beings from different worlds and thehuman one.

Such beings as great kings of pretas, asuras, succubus pretas, preta spirits of sickness, the pretas of poi-8son, the kings of the pretas of joy and prosperity, the kingsof pretas of carnal love and prestige and many pretas andkings of pretas had gathered happily that time, Sakyamuni Buddha told Manjusri, Prince ofthe Dhamma; Now you perceive by mental vision that allthe Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, devas, dragons, pretas andspirits from this and other worlds from this country, inclu-ding other lands are assembled together in this Trayas-trimsa Heaven. Do you know the precise number of themall? Manjusri told the Buddha, O World Honoured One, eventhough I have enormous powers developed through innu-merable kalpas, I am not well acquainted with the exactnumber. The Buddha told Manjusri, Even though I behold throughthe eyes of a Buddha, I, too, am unable to disclose to youthe accurate number of all these deities. They are all thosewhom Ksitigarbha has converted and capably guided fromlong, long ago.

Some are to be relieved and directed byhim in the future. 9 Manjusri told the Buddha, O Honoured of the World, Ihave long practised meritorious deeds and long agoattained unobstructed wisdom. Undeniably, I will trustyour words, but those who pursue the Arahat path, thepath of Heavens, the worship of dragons, and many beingswho will be born in future, will be doubtful and reluctantto adopt what you have strongly emphasized as the , nagas, yaksas gandharvas, asuras, kinnaras, maho-rags, and others of the eight classes with humans to beborn in the future will be filled with suspense and hesitant, although you have pronounced the truth most zealously. Ifyou compel them to believe, they will instead seek tospread evil of the Teaching. Thereupon, I earnestly antici-pate that the Honoured of the World will narrate to us theoriginal vows of this Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva as he com-menced his Bodhisattva career and how he laboured togain such inconceivable success and authority.

The Buddha told Manjusri, Suppose that every blade ofgrass, wood, forest, paddyfield, hill, stone, dust mote, every material thing though numerous as the sands ofthe Ganges, and though each sand-grain is one world andeach dust mote is one kalpa and all numbers are reversedinto kalpas, that which he has done to accomplish the10 Dasabhumi (ten stages of the fifty-two sections of devel-opment), even though they are more than can be mani-fested by words, they are surpassed by the deeds ofKsitigarbha Bodhisattva in his Arahat and PratyokaBuddha stages. Manjusri, this Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva, his vows and hispowers, are indeed inconceivable. If beings, both malesand females, to be born in the future, shall listen to andhail the name of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva, institute homageto Ksitigarbha by chanting his name, communicating offer-ings to Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva and draw or carve hisimage or make likenesses of him, all these beings shall beborn for one hundred births into a special heaven, this isthe Indra Trayastrimsa Heaven (thirty-three in number),the second of the six Heavens of formation, and shall neverdescend into the three evil states forever.

Manjusri, this Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva had been the sonof a respected elder of unaccountable kalpas ago. At thetime when he established his first resolve there was aBuddha by the name of Lion-Power. The youth examinedwith awe the majestic appearance of the Buddha and ques-tioned what he had conducted as a Bodhisattva and what11vow he had performed to accomplish such a divine appear-ance. The Buddha imparted to the youth, If you want togain such an appearance, you must attempt your utmost torelieve the sufferings of all sorrowful beings and continuethis practice for a long, long time. Then the SakymuniBuddha told Manjusri that the Buddha Lion-Power hadcounselled the youth to decide on a vow, as follows Inow determine to relieve the sufferings of beings in the sixrealms of suffering and sorrow, skilfully leading them toSalvation through innumerable kalpas, before I myselfattain Buddhahood. By the youth disciplining such astrong vow before the Buddha Lion-Power, thereupon, forunaccountable kalpas, he has remained in the , there was another Buddha, at a time inconceivablylong ago, who was named Buddha of Flower of Meditationand Enlightenment and who survived to a very great ageof millions of kalpas.

There are three stages for discharg-ing respect to a Buddha a) to the Buddha incarnate,b) to his image, andc) a declaration of faith and the second stage of offering respect to a Buddha, therewas a Brahman girl who had in past ages practised greatbenevolences. Apart from being respected and honouredby people, she had also been bestowed with relief and pro-tection from devas ever since the beginning of her careerof charity. But her mother refused to respect the truth ofthe Dhamma and always uttered evil against the Triple-Gems. Although the Sacred Daughter, as she was called, subjected herself to excessive persuasion over her motherto embrace Right Understanding, the mother was thicklyprejudiced against her daughter s counsel and the mother died, she was reborn in the Avici Hell(Hell of unceasing sufferings), the last of the eight hotHells where punishment continued without Brahman girl was fully aware that her mother did notaccord to the Doctrine of Cause and Effect and committedmany evils in her life; by such bad deeds, therefore, shewould surely sink into an evil birth in the lower Hells ofintense suffering.

Conscious of this Karma, the daughterparted with all her property and belongings by the offeringof flowers and other forms of offering at the temple orpagoda of the Buddha of Flower of Meditation andEnlightenment. The image of the Buddha therein was13magnificently carved and was to be admired in all appear-ances. She insinuated deep respect to this Buddha andsought reasoning solely by herself, This Buddha is fullyenlightened and all-pervading in wisdom. If he were stillembodied in this world of manifestation, I would requestof him where my mother has been cast. I feel sure hewould know the exact realm of her person. After such athought, she knelt before the Buddha s image and was in amost tearful disposition for a considerable length of , she contacted a voice from outer space, address-ing her thus, Sacred Girl, whimper not so sorrowfully. Iwill impart to you where your mother has gone. TheBrahman girl clasped her hands in deep respect andreplied to the voice, What divine being will relieve me ofmy worries and apprehensions?
