LORI, OFBALTIMOREAs long as I can remember, my mother has closed each dayby reciting prayers from a well-worn prayer book that was givenher as a young woman. I doubt there is a single page in thatvolume she doesn t know by heart yet in her hands that it is morethan a book.

8 It is silent witness to years and years of daily prayerand an ever deepening friendship with I was growing up, prayer books like that fell out offashion. It was said that we should not depend on prayerscomposed by others and still less should we recite rote prayers;rather, we should pray from the heart. Of course, we should prayfrom the heart. At the same time, we shouldn t be surprised thatour hearts and minds, when at prayer, need the encouragementand guidance of holy men and women who have left behindprayers that beautifully express God s merciful love and foster ourdevotion.

9 Besides, it is important that even in our purely privateprayer, we use the vocabulary of faith and devotion common toCatholics through the ages and across the prayer books like the present volume are returningto print. We are discovering how prayers drawn from theScriptures, rooted in the Liturgy, and flowing from the hearts ofthe holy, the wise, and the learned help us in our journey towardGod. How readily we can be renewed in the joy and hope ourfaith affords by prayerfully repeating Mary s Magnificat!

10 Howeasily prayer from the heart can be launched by simple acts offaith, hope, and love! How our participation in the Mass is aidedby prayers of preparation and thanksgiving for the gift andmystery of the Timeis a wonderful companion to members of theKnights of Columbus and their families. The Order constantlystresses the importance of sound family life and that requiresfamilies to pray together. How wonderful if Knights and theirfamilies throughout the world would spend time together eachday offering prayers found in this wonderful volume.
