As a result of ins ufficient labour market services and d iffer en ces in r egio naldeve lo pment , rura l-urb an migration espe cia lly for th e yo uth has been themain feat ur e of labour migrat ion i n Tanzania. The prop ortion o f p op ulatio nliving in urban areas increased from 5 percent in 1967 to 13 per ce nt in 1978and from 21 percent in 1988 t o percent in 2002.

10 The migr ation of people from rural to urban areas in creases the bu rden ofurban pub lic ser vices and social infr astructure and results in imbalances inallocation of labour, hence a rapid growth of the urb an info rmal sector an dincreasing incidences of hazardous employment for th e you th. The Gov er nment is supporting pri vat e sector investment so that job cr eatio nand opportunities can be increased.
