The duties of Probation officers require the investigation and management ofconvicted criminal offenders who present physical danger to officers and to the the supervision, treatment, and control of these offenders, these duties requiremoderate to arduous physical exercise, including prolonged periods of walking andstanding, physical dexterity andcoordination necessary to operate a firearm, and use of self-defense tactics. On a dailybasis, these officers face unusual mental and physical stress because they are subjectto danger and possible harm during frequent, direct contact with individuals who areconvicted of committing Federal Because officers must effectively deal with physical attacks and are subject tomoderate to arduous physical exertion, applicants must be physically capable.

2 Officersmust possess, with or without corrective lenses, good distance vision in at least oneeye and the ability to read normal size print. Normal hearing ability, with or without ahearing aid, is also required. First time appointees to positions covered under lawenforcement Officer retirement provisions must not have reached their 37 birthday at thetime of appointment. Applicants 37 or over th who have previous law enforcementexperience under the Civil Service Retirement System or the Federal Employees Retirement System and who have either a subsequent break in service or interveningservice in a non-law enforcement Officer position may have their previous lawenforcement Officer experience subtracted from their age to determine whether theymeet the maximum age Investigation, Drug Screening, and Medical Standards:Prior to appointment, the selectee considered for this position will undergo an extensiveOffice of Personnel management (OPM) background investigation, medicalexamination, and drug screening.

3 Upon successful completion of the backgroundinvestigation, medical examination, and drug screening, the selectee may then beappointed provisionally, pending a favorable suitability determination by the court. Inaddition, as a condition of employment, incumbent will be subject to ongoing randomdrug screening, updated background investigations every five years and, as deemednecessary by management for reasonable cause, may be subject to subsequentfitness-for-duty evaluations and drug screening. 4 Confirmation of hypertension should require atleast three (3) serial readings of blood pressure. Serial readings should include at leastthree (3) blood pressure readings taken on different days and in both arms in astanding, sitting, and recumbent position. All medications taken for cardiovascularconditions should be carefully reviewed to ensure that they do not compromise safe andefficient job performance. Any history of a cardiovascular condition or newly diagnosedconditions should be evaluated on a case-by-case basis and may require which may result in disqualification include, but are not limited to, thefollowing: A. ANGINA PECTORIS B. AORTIC ANEURYSMC. CEREBROVASCULAR CONDITIONS such as Cerebrovascular Accident orTransient Ischemic Attacks or Carotid Artery Disease D. CARDIOMYOPATHYE.

5 CONGENITAL ANOMALIES such as Atrial and Ventricular Septal Defect thatcompromise cardiovascular functionF. CONGESTIVE HEART FAILUREG. CORONARY ARTERY DISEASE OR HISTORY OF MYOCARDIAL INFARCTIONH. DYSRHYTHMIAS such as Ventricular Tachycardia or Fibrillation,Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome, Paroxysmal Atrial Tachycardia with or without block,Atrial Flutter or Fibrillation I. ELECTROCARDIOGRAM FINDINGS such as Left Bundle Branch Block, newlyacquired Right Bundle Branch Block, ST Segment Alterations, AtrioventricularDissociation, First Degree A-V Block with PR interval >= seconds, Second and ThirdDegree A-V Block, Atrial fibrillation or Flutter, Bradycardia with heart rate of less than 40or sinus pauses of seconds or longer, or Long QT SyndromeJ. 6 MARFAN'S SYNDROMEL. MYOCARDITIS, ENDOCARDITIS, AND PERICARDITIS M. OCCLUSIVE PERIPHERAL ARTERIAL DISEASE such as Raynaud's DiseaseN. PULMONARY EMBOLISM with compromise of cardio-pulmonary SYNCOPE, HISTORY OF (Cardiogenic or vasovagal). This history will requirecardiology evaluation and/or tilt table testing for final determination. P. VALVULAR HEART DISEASE such as mitral valve stenosis or regurgitation, aorticstenosis or DEEP VEIN THROMBOSIS which requires PACEMAKERS OR PROSTHETIC VALVES are generally disqualifying. Any othercondition or post-surgical management that requires the use of Coumadin or otheranticoagulants is generally DERMATOLOGYP robation and pretrial services officers and Officer assistants should be free ofdermatological conditions that may result in restricted function or movement, therebyimpairing the safe and efficient performance of essential job functions.

7 Dermatologicalconditions may cause the individual to be unduly susceptible to injury or disease as aconsequence of environmental exposures (including the sun) as well as other dermatological conditions should be reviewed on a case-by-case which may result in disqualification include, but are not limited to, thefollowing: A. PHOTOSENSITIVE SKIN CONDITIONS that significantly limit job performance bylimiting the work environmentIII. ENDOCRINE AND METABOLIC SYSTEMP robation and pretrial services officers and Officer assistants should have an endocrineand metabolic system free of conditions that may affect normal hormonal or metabolicfunctioning and response that is likely to adversely affect safe and efficient jobperformance. Any excess or deficiency in hormonal production can produce metabolicdisturbances affecting weight, stress adaptation, energy production, and a variety ofsymptoms or pathology such as elevated blood pressure, weakness, fatigue andcollapse.

8 All endocrine and metabolic conditions should be reviewed on a Probation Officer RequirementsLast Updated 3/27/08 Page 4 of 16 Conditions which may result in disqualification include, but are not limited to, thefollowing:A. DIABETES MELLITUS OR HYPERGLYCEMIA will require additional medical testsand documentation of treatment to evaluate whether an individual is capable of safeperformance of essential job PARATHYROID DISORDERSC. PITUITARY DYSFUNCTIONSD. THYROID DISEASE (Hypothyroidism or Hyperthyroidism) IV. GASTROINTESTINAL SYSTEMP robation and pretrial services officers and Officer assistants should have agastrointestinal tract that is sufficient for the individual to safely and efficiently carry outthe Requirements of the job. There should be no evidence by physical examination(including laboratory testing) and medical history of gastrointestinal conditions likely topresent a safety risk or to worsen as a result of carrying out the essential job new and existing gastrointestinal conditions should be reviewed on a case-by-casebasis.

9 In addition all medications taken for gastrointestinal conditions should be carefullyreviewed to insure that they do not compromise job performance and therefore interferewith safe and efficient job performance. Any condition that is recurrent with significantdiarrhea and/or pain, that limits activity, that requires pain medication, or that causesanemia, weakness or significant weight loss may be disqualifying. Conditions which may result in disqualification include, but are not limited to, thefollowing:A. ANAL FISSURESB. CHOLECYSTITIS, CHOLELITHIASIS, AND GALLBLADDER DISEASEC. CIRRHOSIS OF THE LIVER D. CROHN'S DISEASE, ULCERATIVE COLITIS, REGIONAL ENTERITIS, ILEITIS,AND IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME E. DIVERTICULITIS causing severe or uncontrollable pain or bowel movementF. DYSPHAGIA causing severe or uncontrollable symptomsG.

GENITOURINARY SYSTEM Probation and pretrial services officers and Officer assistants should have agenitourinary system that is sufficient for the individual to safely and efficiently carry outthe Requirements of the job. All medications taken for genitourinary conditions should becarefully reviewed to insure that they do not compromise job performance and thereforeinterfere with safe and efficient job performance. All genitourinary conditions should bereviewed on a case-by-case basis. Conditions which may result in disqualification include, but are not limited to, thefollowing:A. DYSMENORRHEA OR ENDOMETRIOSIS that causes chronic and severe painrequiring the frequent use of narcotic medicationsB.
