Family drug courts (FDCs) offer an important and effective way to address substance use disorders and parenting within the child welfare and court systems. In existence since 1994, with more than 300 programs in operation today, FDCs grew out of the adult criminal drug court movement that began in Miami in 1989. In the mid-1990s, the adult criminal drug court model was described by the National Association of drug court Professionals (NADCP) in Defining drug Courts: The Ten Key Components,1 which offered a framework to develop and refine adult drug courts.
