3 This Prospectus describes the range of our courses and different activities done at the UNIVERSITY which will give you a flavour of life in our various campuses. The UNIVERSITY of Dar es SALAAM is a unique community of students and staff dedicated to bringing out the best in all its members. Our aim is to provide the best possible environment for teaching, learning research and public services. Our track record of success is well known in East Africa, Africa and the rest of the world. We will continue to ensure that your years at this UNIVERSITY will be filled with excitement and experiences that you can treasure for a lifetime. 5 Professor William, A. L. Anangisye VICE CHANCELLOR July 2020 2 _____ postgraduate Prospectus - 2020/2021 The UNIVERSITY of Dar es SALAAM is the oldest public UNIVERSITY in Tanzania. It is situated on the western side of the city of Dar es SALAAM , occupying 1,625 acres on the observation hill, 13 kilometers from the city centre. It was established on 1st July 1970 through parliament act no. 12 of 1970 and all the enabling legal instruments of the constituent colleges. The UNIVERSITY is currently focusing on extending postgraduate training including PhD by coursework and dissertation, distancing e-learning programmes and increasing the diversity of programmes on offer. 6 The UNIVERSITY has eight campuses UDSM Mwalimu Nyerere Main Campus, the Institute of Marine Sciences (IMS) located in Zanzibar; the School of Journalism and Mass Communication (SJMC) located in Mikocheni, Dar es SALAAM ; the College of Information and Communication Technology (CoICT) in Kijitonyama, Dar es SALAAM , UNIVERSITY of Dar es SALAAM Mineral Resources Institute in (UDSM MRI) in Dodoma and Nzega, Mbeya College of Health and Allied Science (MCHAS) located in Mbeya; the Dar es SALAAM UNIVERSITY College of Education (DUCE) located at Chang ombe, Dar es SALAAM ; and the Mkwawa UNIVERSITY College of Education (MUCE) located in Iringa. Every year, candidates are admitted into the UNIVERSITY of Dar es SALAAM to pursue various degree programmes/courses tenable at the said campuses. The UNIVERSITY has continued to grow and expand in terms of diversified academic programmes and student numbers.

7 The number of students admitted at the UNIVERSITY of Dar es SALAAM has been increasing steadily. There were only 14 students in 1961. Presently, the UNIVERSITY has a population of over 40,000 students pursuing undergraduate and postgraduate degrees and non-degree programmes respectively. With regard to academic programmes, the UNIVERSITY offers various programmes leading to the award of certificates, diplomas, undergraduate, postgraduate diploma, Masters and PhD degrees. The UNIVERSITY admits local students as well as foreign students from several countries worldwide through established links, exchange programmes or individual applications. Most of the postgraduate students receive their bursaries from their respective governments. Also, students from other countries are considered for admission to undergraduate and postgraduate studies on self-sponsored basis. INTRODUCTION TO THE UNIVERSITY OF DAR ES SALAAM postgraduate Prospectus - 2020/2021 3 A: STUDENT ADMINISTRATION The Department of Student Administration, headed by the Dean of Students, deals primarily with the personal and social welfare aspects of the student s life.

8 The following facilities are provided by the office of Dean of Students: residence, games and sport, worship, student counseling in various problems and career guidance. The Dean of Students also assists the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration) in student disciplinary matters. Residence A limited number of rooms in the Halls of Residence is available on application before the beginning of the academic year. Accommodation in the halls is therefore not guaranteed for every student. Therefore, students are urged to find their own accommodation outside the halls. Presently, there are six Halls of Residence on the main campus. There are also residential places for students at Ubungo and Mabibo Hostels. Payment of rent is made to the UNIVERSITY Students Accommodation Bureau (USAB) offices located near Hall V premises and through the NBC Ltd. on campus. No student will be given a room in the Halls of Residence until s/he has paid the prescribed rent.

9 Priority for on-campus accommodation will be given to students with disabilities, foreign students, and female students from up country. Student Activities Most of the student activities are organized by DARUSO, the students union. DARUSO is concerned with the students academic, political, social and recreational activities. Students are encouraged to form academic/professional organizations. They are also encouraged to form and join social organizations that have been registered. New social and academic organizations are registered at the Dean of Students office. Games and Sports The UNIVERSITY main campus has a range of sporting facilities. These include an international size track field, a swimming pool, tennis courts, soccer pitches, netball and basketball courts, hockey and cricket fields. A well-equipped gymnasium, badminton and squash courts are also available. Students can therefore participate in recreational activates such as athletics, swimming, lawn tennis, table tennis, soccer (football), basketball, netball, hockey, badminton, cricket, handball and boxing to have fun, maintain healthy lifestyles, and socialize.

10 Religious Activities Students and staff of the UNIVERSITY of Dar es SALAAM have complete freedom of worship based on their spiritual beliefs, within the limitations of the laws of the country and Student By-Laws. At the Mwalimu Nyerere Campus, there is a Mosque for Moslems whereas Christian s worship services are conducted at the Joint Christian Chapel. Both facilities are situated near Hall No. 4 along Biafra and Kilimahewa Roads. Catering The UNIVERSITY offers cafeteria services for all meals to students at subsidised rates. The meals are paid for at the cafeteria counters. There are three cafeterias and the number of canteens on the main campus which have the capacity to serve the present student population. Other food outlets available on the main campus are found at CoET, Administration Block, Hill Park, Magufuli Hostel and UDASA Club. B: MEDICAL SERVICES The UNIVERSITY of Dar es SALAAM Health Centre (UHC) provides preventive, curative and restorative health services to UNIVERSITY students, staff and general public.
