2 Give information to patient/carer. Ensure adequate and appropriate hydration according to condition of the patient, and document appropriately. Decontaminate hands before and after each patient contact; examination gloves should be worn to manipulate Catheter . Ensure Catheter is cleaned by washing around the urethral meatus with soapy water and drying thoroughly at least once daily and as required. Maintain closed system; empty Catheter bag when full. Catheter must be kept lower than bladder, off the floor and free from kinks to allow free drainage. 3 If patient uncomfortable or not passed urine within 6 hours of removal report to doctor. Name and time: If required take specimen from access point using aseptic technique and send for culture and sensitivity. Discuss the selection of an appropriate drainage system with the patient. Encourage the use of leg bags to promote mobility. Ensure leg bag is secured to alternate legs to prevent pressure occurring on limb. If patient is immobile, select a free drainage system and attach a night bag for night time use. Patient discharged with indwelling Catheter : Give written & verbal information. Patient information leaflet available on intranet: Ensure DN aware of discharge & patient has adequate supplies of suitable equipment.
