6 The newest member of theSwing-Flex SURGEBUSTER is a swing check Valve thatfully meets ANSI/AWWA C508. But here iswhere the similarities to traditional swing checkvalves SURGEBUSTER achieves rapid closurethrough a short disc stroke of 35 andadjustable Disc Accelerator . The short discstroke is less than half the typical 80 to 90 stroke of a conventional swing check Valve . Itis achieved by placing the Valve seat on a 45 angle while maintaining a full flow area equalto the mating pipe (Figures 1 & 2.)

7 The Disc Accelerator is a precision formedstainless steel mechanism that closes the valvedisc rapidly thus avoiding slamming by flowreversal and yet allowing the disc to be stabi-lized under flow conditions. The accelerator isfully enclosed within the Valve and completelyout of the flow path (Figures 1 & 2).Traditional swing check valves use outsidelevers with weights or springs in an attempt toreduce slam. By doing so, they pull the discdown into the flow and reduce the length of thedisc stroke so that it closes , while outside levers and weightshelp solve one problem, they create two headloss and maintenance areinevitable with traditional swing check the disc down into the flow creates ablockage in the line and causes tremendousheadloss and turbulence.

8 With the disc oscillat-ing in the flow, the shaft, bearings, and shaftseal are all subjected to severe wear andreduced service many applications, even this approach hasproven ineffective and led to the inclusion of anair cushion cylinder. The air cushion is attachedto the weight or spring powered lever that ispulling the disc down. The traditional air cush-ion on the other hand is working in reverse byslowing the disc through its full stroke andallowing reverse flow to build. The end result,especially on fast flow reversal systems, is aslamming check Valve and water SURGEBUSTER with its short 35-degreestroke and Disc Accelerator provide fast clo-sure thereby preventing slam and the resultantsurge without obstructing flow or the need is so confident in the SURGEBUSTER Snon-slam performance that we guarantee* thevalve will outperform any air cushion swingcheck Valve with weight and lever.
