Today, Hadrian s Wall is part of thetransnational Frontiers of the Roman Empire WHS,inscribed in 2005 and currently comprisingHadrian s Wall, the German Limes and theAntonine Wall in s Wall is a very sensitive place, a fragilepiece of our heritage.

8 Almost everywhere that youwalk is archaeologically important, so we all have aresponsibility to make sure that the survivingremains are preserved for future well as the visible archaeology (both masonryand earthworks) that you can see there is muchmore buried beneath the very paths that runalongside the Wall. We want to avoid damage anderosion to the ancient monument and the bestway of doing this is by maintaining the path besidethe Wall as a healthy grass of Aesica Fort (Great Chesters) Natural England / Graeme PeacockCONSERVATION TIPS: PLEASE DO NOTstand or climb onHadrian s Wall.

9 Ditches, mounds and other earthworkfeatures are archaeologically sensitive and protected by a grass surface. To help reduce the wear and tear on the ground,please walk side by side instead of singlefile and try to avoid Walking in worn really does help. The ground surface that protects thearchaeology is most vulnerable in wetwinter conditions (November to April).Circular walks have been designed so that walkers can experience the World Heritage Site, whilst limiting their impacton archaeological remains. Take special care not to damage, destroy or remove natural or historicalfeatures.
